Rob Ryan schooled again

Ryan's redzone defense was bad, but let's not get carried away. If not for our horrible ST play, the Commanders never had a chance. They drove the length of the field for 10 points. I wouldnt say he got "schooled".

Truth. Let's not let them off the hook.

I think this game has less to do with scheme and more to do with just straight up football. You can’t be exotic against Shanny, you have to play sound football and wait for them to make mistakes. Players have to make plays. Credit Grossman for playing well. I thought the special teams was horrible and i also thought the offense did not play well. The entire team looks much too confused for my liking.

It was the same areas that Philly attacked us when the Skins moved the ball against us. I think it is a systematic weakness that was being exploited. Maybe the answer is to mix in more man coverage which we can't do until Jenkins is back.

Yep. They pretty much schemed guys open in those area all game. Simple routes. People can dismiss this all they want but teams with better talent like the Giants and even the Cardinals will milk this until Ryan adjusts.

The Commanders drove the length of the field when it MATTERED.

Down 24-17, they drove what was it 90 yards to tie it up?

Then in OT they drove all the way into FG range, but luckily Gano didn't come through.

That was a pretty poor performance by the defense, especially considering how terrible Washington's O has been playing all year.

we cant defend the playaction pass at all,its been a problem for many seasons now.
I love The Rat but I think the team needs someone that can push the pocket. Qbs find it too easy to step up and get the pass off.

Well, one thing that can be said... I don't think anyone has to worry about Ryan getting a HC job next year. I'm kinda glad though, I believe he will go after a true NT and move Rat outsidde to shore up the middle. Unfortunately the way his brother's team and this Dallas D is playing it looks like the Ryan mystique may be fading a bit.

I'm pretty sure Dan Snyder pays his players as well. They are professionals for a reason. You can't keep giving a pro team short fields and putting your defense's back against the wall. The 89 yard drive was disappointing but if you want to look at a coach who got schooled today, look no further than coach D. His ST unit was atrocious.

The penalties on ST have been a big problem for a while.

The season is a complilation of multiple segments. Strategies & schemes succeed, teams adjust, you re-adjust, they re-adjust etc. And of course available personnel, plus individual match-ups etc.

I think your point is valid. I just don't think it's quite as simple as a scheme being flawed that once discovered makes it useless (not that you're implying that). Guess all I'm saying is that I'm sure Ryan is paying attention, and keeping after it too.

It's all we can do.

We are slow in adjusting. That is a lot of our problem from the get go. Do you know how many times we fell for the PA and Grossman would roll right and make a big completion? We fell for it like 4x before our DL would finally slow down enough to watch for it.

They were killing us w/ play action all day. :bang2:

Those big passes were killing us. The Skins WRs were doing a gorgeous job finding the spot in the zone and sinking down for a big catch. All the while Sensy is 7-8 yrds deeper and Newman is at least 5-6 yards outside.

I cried

That is two out of three division games where Ryan was taken to school by the opposition offensive coordinator. He was facing a Skins team that can't run the ball, Grossman at QB and a pretty pathetic set of receivers and he let's them go 89 yards with the game on the line with nary any resistance.

Grossman repeatedly hit receivers on deep-ins for 15-20 yards per completion. We also repeatedly gave up 10-15 yards for untested completions in the flat. There is something very wrong with his scheme or the execution of his scheme that is going on right now.

After the Philly game I thought it was a bit of an aberration due to how much fear he had of DJax going deep but there is no such excuse for defending the Skins. They were able to do many of the same things at will with the game on the line. I'm not smart enough to figure out what is wrong or how to fix it but something has been found that he has to now counter. I don't want this to become like 2006 when Parcells D became near useless in the last 5 games of the season and gave up 30+ ppg repeatedly.

On the bright side, I don't think we need to worry so much about losing him after this season.

I think he needs another pass rusher and he needs Bruce Carter out there defending the zones so things can get tightened up a bit more. I think there is hope of getting Carter ready to play some more snaps for the stretch run but I don't see a hope of finding another pass rusher on this roster this year.

I really do hope Ryan figures it out because I think we have a good shot at getting into the playoffs. If the defense can play like they were earlier in the year we can beat anyone including GB if we catch Rodgers on a bad day and Romo is in the zone.

Disagree. He didn't get schooled. Others have pointed out the shortcomings on ST and the fact we're shorthanded at ILB. By no means do I think the D gets a pass, but besides ST, as was mentioned, offensively we stunk up the joint too. We got the pick and all we needed was a field goal and couldn't manage that. We came up short on that side of the ball all day too. All three areas were lacking. So IMO it's not all on Ryan.

But I really wasn't so surprised - don't take that for being cool with it because I hated it - as it was the Skins. The one thing that's a sure thing is that records don't matter when we play each other.

Who cares? We won all that matters.

I think everyone knows that. But you can still have problems on your team. This is a quality discussion topic.

Yes he was. They better address CB and Defensive Line in next years draft.

They have to consider adding veteran specialists. Maybe a 4-3 DE for obvious passing downs and perhaps a 3-4 DE with some pass rush.

Frankly, the way our defense started the game, Washington had no business only being down by 10. 5 drives without a first down, I think it was?

Our offense squandered opportunities to end this game early.

We aren't 10-0, Its perfectly fine to talk about the teams problems.

St put us in some tough spots today, but our d did not play well at all, can't give up nearly 400 yards to rex grossman. Good defenses never let that game to ot.
