That is not what I meant. You called him a pass/run QB. I think most people who look at him see a passer and don't consider the run aspect. I didn't see anyone even talk about his running abilities in this thread. It was mostly about his passing as it should be. Sure he can run, but they are judging him on his passing abilities which are pretty good. I judge him as a passer. That is why I think the running is only a bonus. With other guys like Vick, Young and Tebow, they were runners who could pass some. I would like Griffin even if he couldn't run fast. I like him as a passer and he isn't the only QB I like this season.
And you need to get over the spread offense stuff. More and more QBs coming out of college are playing in spread offenses. It seems that most of them play in some sort of spread offense in college. They all have to adjust to the NFL.
I brought up the running/scrambling aspect of his game because folks have been talking about it on this thread. You're right, I want to talk about his passing game too. I'm not worried about his athleticism.
But when I watch him purely as a passer, I'm not overly impressed with RG3 as a prospect. Rather, I'm watching a really good college QB playing at a high-level. I see a guy with average height for the position, who is built like a WR, seemingly has an adequate arm, not a
gun as some are supposing, throwing a lot of short underneath routes mixed in with some simple crossing, and an occasional 9 route.
And yes, the vast majority of college QBs play in a spread now. It's been that way for quite awhile now. You also hear scouts around the combine/draft time quip that it's harder to judge prospects because the offensive schemes are so different than pro schemes; many of these QBs have never even taken a snap under center (Alex Smith comes to mind); are used to making quick throws to a predetermined receiver as opposed to having to read a defense and go through their progressions patiently trying to find an open man.
One of the reasons why Andrew Luck is considered such a lock as the top pick is not only because he's got great physical traits, production, and smarts, but also because he's the most pro-ready having played in a prostyle offense with Harbaugh. It's much easier to project him.
Here are a few things I
do think RGIII has going for him (in no specific order) in his favor:
I. The kid is very intelligent; you give him the benefit of the doubt that he'll figure it out. Although, as a side note, Alex Smith also scored one of the highest Wonderlick scores in combine history, so take it FWIW.
II. His athleticism may allow him to overcome some mistakes/shortcomings.
III. In theory, the fact that more NFL teams are utilizing three/four+ WR sets stands to benefit QBs like RG3 coming out of a college spread, as it give them a more familiar look.
