Rod Marinelli could be most important Cowboy in 2016

http://thelandryhat.com/2016/03/23/rod-marinelli-most-important-cowboy-2016/

The way free agency has unfolded for the Dallas Cowboys, the team’s most important person in 2016 could be defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli.

To say that the Dallas Cowboys must improve the team’s pass rush in 2016 is as obvious as saying that a fish needs water to survive. Yet, many fans are concerned about the organization’s unwillingness to add high profiled players to the defensive line but fans should not overlook what Dallas Cowboys’ defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli can do with a group of undervalued but hard-working defensive linemen.

Thus far, the Cowboys have added only two new players to the team’s defensive line. On March 10th, Dallas signed defensive tackle Cedric Thornton to a 4-year deal and on Tuesday America’s Team learned that the Oakland Raiders would not match Dallas’ contract offer to defensive end Benson Mayowa.

The only other moves the team seems poised to make on the defensive line are the resigning of defensive tackle Jack Crawford and the drafting of rookie defensive linemen in next moth’s NFL Draft. Most predict that Dallas will draft Ohio State defensive end Joey Bosa with the fourth pick in the draft and even if that comes to fruition there will be no stars on the 2016 Dallas Cowboys defensive line.

This is where defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli must be at his best. The long-time NFL coach has built his reputation on his ability to coach defensive linemen and the 2016 Cowboys may need him to do his best coaching job yet.

After entering the NFL coaching ranks in 1996 as the defensive line coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Marinelli quickly garnered praise for his work with the young Buccaneers’ pass rushers. While in Tampa Bay, Marinelli groomed second-year defensive tackle Warren Sapp, a 2013 Pro Football Inductee and a young defensive end named Simeon Rice who would be named a four-time All-Pro honoree...

He's going to need to be again. Looks like there's not going to be upgrades for him to use.

At best we will have a marginal talent increase over last year. If pass rush is what's important than we will have a talent reduction from last year.

Thornton isn't a pass rusher. He is a situational player that is a run stuffer.
DE will be a downgrade no matter who we draft unless Gregory can get his act together. Missing the first 4 games won't help him for sure.

Marinelli will need to find a way to dial up pressure without relying on our guys to just line up and beat one on one match ups. The Panthers, Seahawks, Broncos use scheme to generate pressure. We will need to figure out how to create pressure in these ways.

The great Gil Brandt was hosting on NFL radio this morning, took a question from a Cowboy caller who asked who was in play with the 4th pick since he reported it would not be a QB. Gil had no answer. He said because of the RB signing it wouldn't be Elliot. He said the Cowboys need a pass rusher but that Bosa and Buckner were not pass rushers and would never be considered elite pass rushers in their careers. He said they are not worth the 4th pick, probably should go after the 10th pick. Ramsey will be gone he said. He really had no answer.

Thornton is and upgrade but they down graded at de. Can't expect drafted players to do much their 1st year.

Benson, I will call him because his lat name is too hard to spell correctly, Gregory and Crawford Mincey and Russel. There's enough there to get a committee rush. Plus Irving, and Thornton can play multiple spots.

Just as long as we have upgraded Golden Cock and he doesnt see the field we are already better.

I would then trade down and take DT Sheldon Rankins.

He is not a miracle worker, he can't polish a turd into a diamond.the sad part is he shoots himself in the foot by putting trash at 1tech position which affects the entire defense detrimentally.

just take the QB and be done with it!

lol, but the given was that what remained at the four slot was not that quality. That included the QB's...but that's a different discussion.

you can applaud them for being frugal and not overspending in free agency, but it takes talent to win in the NFL. And by signing the bottom feeders, that is what you are getting. Not the top of the line talent you need to win in the NFL. Even Miracle worker Marinelli needs talent.

Talent wins games, not an old coordinator running a dinosaur of a system. Rod hasn't been able to field a D that can generate a pass rush since he's been here. Now he's supposed to do it with the least amount of talent he's ever coached? Good luck...

Some already waiving the surrender flag. Even at this extremely early point in the OFF SEASON.

We have the most hard nosed, diehard, great fans in the world!:p

I know I know. You've had your feelings hurt too many times. Sorry. I retract my statement.

Correct. And there are no Sapp's or Rice's in this group. Marinelli gets great credit for developing a great d-line in Tampa. But he doesn't have a fraction of the talent to work with in Dallas. You need a miracle of biblical proportions to get 40+ sacks out of this group.
