If I'm correct, Hardys NLTBE bonuses are game
bonuses. Basically, he plays and you have to have the cap room or deal with the consequences. Mcclain has 2 of those as well, for 188k extra space if he plays in 16 games. His other bonuses for snaps are not a game bonus, so I believe those would go onto next years cap.

Sounds right to me. I think the main factor is when the bonus gets paid. Game bonuses are paid weekly and therefore must be accounted for weekly on the cap.

Hardy was active for 2 games last year so 2 games at 580k are counted immediately and the other 14 are counted as he plays.
McClain played in 14 games, so those first 14 are LTBE and count immediately. The other 2 at 94k per game would be charged as played and paid.

Hardy's sack incentives and McClain's snap incentives would be settled at years end. If there was room on 2015's cap they would be taken off right then, if not, space would be taken from 2016.

Dallas is getting really good at their contracts now. Noticed how his extra bonus is based on % of snaps and not just games played. Kudos to front office for finally behaving like power franchise.

Signing two players (Dez and Hardy) to deals that pay them in excess of a combined $26 million in 2015 will do that to you. If they were both long-term deals, the cap number would be reduced significantly.

We really need to get a LT deal done with Dez so we can bring some other guys in this year...

We don't have 32 million in space next year. Crawford, Hardy, McClain, Dez and Leary will be free agents. Plus, all of our current CBs will be gone. We won't even have enough money next year to bring back our own guys. Sort of like this season.

Of those only Dez and Hardy will really demand that much money... maybe Crawford as well. Leary can be replaced easily, in the draft if need be, and I don't see McClain demanding much more money than he did this year. Beyond that there is Smith's 10 million if they need to make some room.

We are probably fine for this year, and I doubt Dez's contract will be that back heavy... just because we don't want to be on the line for a ton of money down the road.

I bet Dez has a low cap hit year 1 and it escalates in year 2 some, before jumping in year 3 and 4 then dropping back down some. I'm sure it will have built in restructure years if they need them. Now Hardy I bet is more front Heavy if he's extended. Probably would want to get the biggest cap hits in earlier, just in case he gets off track again. The team wouldn't want to be on the hook for 25m+ in dead money if something were to happen.

The team is actually in pretty good shape next year cap wise. It will very flush with cap space and can be selective with how it structures their contracts for maximum flexibility moving forward. When I actually looked, I thought to myself, Hardy won't be getting out of Dallas unless Dallas doesn't want him.

Which is exactly why I don't want a DE first round. We can get an elite DE again next year in free agency if we need too... we need to get an elite RB and CB this draft in the first, maybe even a 1-tech.

I think making it back-heavy is the smart move because I don't think we are all that many years off from a 200m cap. Each year we will continue to see 5, 7, 10m increases. I would render to guess that at max it'll take 10 years to reach a 200m cap. That means paying Dez 20m in 6 years from now is likely entirely feasible, as it would likely make up a much smaller % of the overall cap than it would today.

We also will likely see roster size increase to at least 55 (meaning an extra 64 people would have jobs), likely 60 (meaning an extra 256 people would have jobs, a fairly significant amount,) over the coming years. Otherwise, player salaries will start reaching even-more obscene figures.

I agree about expanding the rosters. Especially if they are serious about 18 games, expanding the playoffs and taking player health seriously. They could add 6-10 players to the game day rosters just for Special Teams.
