It's practically a CZ sport to bash Jerry for premature contracts and some are worried about McClain's after one good game?

Not worried...just discussing some "what if" possibilities. No harm in that! :)

Sorry , McClain is doing well right now but if Sean could stay healthy I would his intelligence and "want to" over mcclain's athleticism

i'm greedy, i would like both. slide lee outside and it may take some wear off him. but a 2 year deal, very team friemdly is about the way to go. he still gets a shot at a big payday because he is so young and we get a safe deal for him to prove he has the desire to play

McClain is only 25, so a two year deal would still enable him to get the big payday at the end of the two years with good, consistent play. I have a feeling that's how it will go, given that he completes this year with at least solid play.

I'm not concerned with how old he is. He could be 22 or 32. Dude's a liability in terms of future planning as far as I am concerned. Nobody knows if he'll be around more than a week, if that.

No payday for McClain
The guy has major commitment and consistency issues
Pay him on a incentive HEAVY contract year to year or let him walk

If McClain continues to play exceptionally well, then by mid season I would seriously think about going to him and telling him that we would go ahead and tear that contract up since he's out playing it, give him a new one for the remainder of 2014, and all of 2015 and 2016, at which point we could re-look at things.

Tell him he is getting more this season than we have to pay him, but we expect a reasonable contract for all 2.5 years of it.

He would appreciate Dallas doing something this year where he is clearly out playing his $700K contract, and would hopefully see that as part of why he needs to sign a reasonable contract.

IMO it would build goodwill with McClain and all other inexpensive players would see that Dallas upped his contract in mid season in order to make it fair with how well he is playing.

I think it would make him a little less likely to ask/expect a big deal. Plus, he should understand incentives and not a lot of signing bonus, (like Melton) so it would limit the teams concerns.

Completely understand your apprehension towards his reliability. The only way I would consider a safe two year deal with him if I were JJ, is IF he convinced me by year's end that his demons are gone and he played consistently solid football. Contracts can have stipulations that safeguard the organization in the event of lapses in judgement/desire, which McClain would have no basis for argument if that's the way JJ wanted to go.

That would be another good way to go.

We need to see a bit larger piece of work from him before offering a contract. That being said, I think it's a good problem for us to have!

The team should pay him year-to-year, 2 years at the max, with minimal amounts guaranteed.
Well, sure, except that almost certainly isn't an option. Somebody will offer him more than that, a lot more, if he continues playing this well throughout the season.

Who? Just the way they were banging down the door at the Ravens to get the guy?

He's a headcase. Most teams don't care to deal with a guy like that.

Well, to be fair, if he finishes out this season continuing to play that well, it will clearly be a different situation than when we got his rights from Baltimore. Clearly way different.

And maybe you're correct that he's a headcase, but just because he went through a bad couple of years in his life doesn't mean that he's always going to have mental issues. Whatever it was, he has it straight now. I know I did a lot of maturing between 23 and 25 years old... perhaps he did too.

You and I just don't know, but the team will have a much better idea by the time he is ready for a new contract. Dallas has been pretty much money on acquiring talent for a while now... I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and if they resign him, I'll trust their decision.

Most teams would gladly sign a "headcase" who performs the way McClain's performed right now, as long as it continues through the rest of the season. And it doesn't take most, anyway. It takes one out of the other 31 teams. Somebody will pay him if the Cowboys don't.

The Cowboys have nursed bi polar players needing daily medication for a couple years as well. And they got good production from them.

This is no where near that category...and not the challenge as to logic as well.

Exactly, my friend...Dallas already had faith to start the process from the start. I don't see them jumping ship for fan perceived apprehensions.

When they believe in a player, that player has to earn rejection from that point...and that is what playing in the NFL is all about. As that ingredient is what seperates the big boys from the also in the leagues.

McClain will be the first to tell you that he was on the wrong path. He was arrested three times in a 16-month span before the Cowboys traded for him in July.
Now, McClain says he’s on the right path and has no desire of going back.
“I didn’t deserve to play football, so to say,” McClain said of retirement. “I wasn’t all the way there in the game. So you ain’t going to be the best if you ain’t focused on the job, so I needed to take time to do what was important, get myself right, and I got that right and now I’m in a great organization, got some great teammates and just happy to play football again.”

I commend the guy he did what he had to do, I'm glad he is here and I look forward to having him here for a good while
