People forget that it was the return of Newman that induced Wade Phillips to actually play way more man-to-man coverage, increasing the pressure up-front. Getting rid of Newman is absolutely stupid, if just from a philosophical view-point in how we play defense. Further, it was Newman that was pushing for man-to-man prior to his injury, which actually shows the influence he has on this defense. I have absolutely no problems with Newman saying we should employ more confusion in our defensive packages, whether in the secondary or up-front. Wade, I don't believe, brushes the value of Newman's opinions aside.

Ummm.....he has definitely been a shutdown corner when healthy. Far better than "solid" at the very least.

I think we can go after Samari Rolle & Julius Peppers..The way to do it is trade Newman for peppers and bring in Samari Rolle..He is just as good as T-New. He is also a little bigger..I like newman but he is more talk than results..Rolle can cover just as good..With peppers & ware bringing the heat upfront..The D could be back in Dallas! Just kicking this around..

Samari Rolle is clearly on the down side of his career. Why would anyone here want to do this? Also, if Peppers was still the player some say he still is, Carolina would have found a way to keep him. It's not like that defense has all that many great players anymore. (Yeah, I know they had to pay big $$$ to Jordan Gross, but still...)

what exactly do you define as a game changer or shutdown CB now?

He clearly alters team's game plans because he is rarely thrown at. He blankets receivers and almost never gives up big plays or TD's, and rarely commits a penalty. His coverage stats are always at the top of the league.

Sounds like he is a game changer and shutdown CB to me.

At least we didn't get Dwayne Robertson. Newman has been a disappointment, but not as much as that guy has.

Newman isnt one of them...he's one of the best players in the league at his position...31 other teams would love to have the guy...only in the bizarro world of CZ do we see him compared the busts like Dwayne Robertson
