Romancing the Kidney Stone

Anyone had kidney stones? Woke up yesterday morning with back pain. I thought it was from doing yard work the day before. I put a heating pad on it and it went away for a few hours but after dinner it came back with a vengeance. I figured that ruled out muscle soreness.

Anyway, about an hour later I had blood in my urine so I had the wife drive me to the emergency room. They did all the tests and gave me a CAT scan and sure enough I had a single stone on my left side making its way to my bladder. The ER doctor told me it was in the ureter close to the bladder but not quite there yet. They gave me morphine for the pain and sent me home after the initial wooziness wore off. When I first got to the hospital the pain was about an 8 on a scale of 1 - 10. After the morphine it was about a 1 or a 2. I could feel something but I would not describe it as pain.

Anyway, today the pain has been minimal. No visible signs of blood in the urine. I am currently experiencing little pulses of pain in my back maybe around a 3.

My questions are, how do I know I have passed the stone? I read the pain should move from the back to the lower abdomen as the stone gets closer to the bladder. My pain is still located in the back on me left side. Is that normal?

Romancing the Stone!

Good luck dude. Never had them, but always hear the stories.

I heard them too. But to be honest, for me it was not as painful as I expected or as some other injuries I have had. It felt like a pulled muscle in my back. My bright red pee was the only thing that got me to the emergency room.

I had them about 15 years ago. Horrible experience. I was vomiting as I was in so much pain. Being military at the time I had to go to two different military clinics (it was on a Saturday - limited services) and the pain medicine wasn't working. I finally got transferred to a civilian hospital and they gave me morphine. I feel asleep for an hour or two. When I woke I went to the bathroom and urinated in a funnel type thing with a mesh screen filter. The stone finally passed and I was amazed at how something so small could cause so much pain.

My daughter had kidney stones a week later. We quit drinking tea after that as it's supposedly a big contributor to kidney stones. I stay hydrated now much more than I did back in the day. I haven't had them since. I used to have a guy work for me who was in his early 60's and he would get them all the time. He even collected them in small glass containers.

I had one once, but didn't have much back pain, from what I remember. What I remember most was having a lot of trouble urinating, and the worst cold sweat I've ever experienced. Driving myself to the hospital in 10 degree weather was brutal! It turned out to be 7mm, and there was no way I was going to be able to pass it, because it wouldn't even fit in the ureter, apparently. They did a lithotripsy, which means you lay on your back in a puddle while sonic vibrations break up the stone. They put me under for the procedure, telling me that the repetitive vibrations would get extremely painful, and that I'd wake up sore and have a bruise for a few days. I woke up and never felt a thing, and had no bruising whatsoever. The procedure must've completely pulverized the stone, because I never felt anything pass. All in all, it was the most successful hospital visit I've ever had.

Yes, the nausea is awful. The gave me something for that too. Just fixing that was such a huge relief.

I had one back in 2011. Woke up with the worst abdominal pain that I have ever had. Thought it was food poisoning, but when I sat on the bowl, there was no relief. Made me wonder whether it was my appendix, but I couldn't get any relief no matter what position I was in (sitting, standing, laying down). I went to the emergency room, and they took my BP - it was 177 over 107. When I urinated at the hospital, there was some blood. I got a CAT scan done, and you could see the stone in the scan. It was still lodged in my kidney. The doctor gave me three drugs, and told me if it didn't pass in 72 hours to go see a urologist. They gave me an IV and some pain meds, which reduced the pain from a 10 to a 3. Three days later, still in pain, I saw the urologist. He said that there was no chance in hell that it was going to pass based on the size of it (was like 8mm in width). I had to get surgery to get it removed - they did shockwave lithotripsy (they blast your side with shockwaves until the stone breaks). When I came to after it, my kidney felt like hamburger. My first time peeing looked like a Carrie White bloodbath. I had to pee into a strainer to catch the pieces of stone as I passed it. Took four days to fully pass it - felt like having broken glass going through me.

I have had a fair number of physical ailments - I have a torn ACL in my left knee, I have a partially torn patellar tendon in my right knee, and am bone on bone in that knee. I have two herniated disks in my back, have dislocated my thumb, elbow and jaw multiple times. I have a torn labrum in my shoulder. None of those ailments come anywhere near the degree of pain that the kidney stone had. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

Weird. Our experiences were very similar up until after the lithotripsy. Once I woke up after mine, it was as if nothing had ever happened...Oh wait, they didn't send me to a urologist or give me any pain meds. They just set up the procedure appointment and sent me home. I'm just now remembering that they didn't do the lithotripsy the same night. I remember because the pain would come and go, as the stone moved around trying to enter the ureter.
I've had a ruptured ear drum, a gangrenous gallbladder, and arthritis in my spine, and yes, all three were more painful than the kidney stone, but I still wouldn't wish one on my worst enemy.

That sucks, I haven't experienced it myself. Glad the pain isn't too bad currently.

Fist to chest homie.
That shizznice is for real.

You'll definitely know when it's out.

Listening to good, slow blues and shooting out positive vibes your way Big Dog.

And I'm going to take a toke and go further down this musical rabbit hole...

I'm sorry, but while I do like and appreciate Justin Timberlake.
This one doesn't do it for me.

And I really gave it a chance.

Live edit: he's better the second song, but this guy still doesn't have a blue's bone in his body and it's clear.

The band was incredible.
And to be there live would have been amazing.

I'm just being grouchy about JT.

Hmm, I don't care for JT's music, but I thought he did great on both of these songs, especially the second one. Oh well, different strokes.

Absolutely my good friend.

I did say I thought he hit it better on the second, so we agreed there!

I have had kidney stones twice and it is the most pain I have ever went through. The first time I had to go to the ER and the nurse told me that now you know what childbirth is like. The second time I didn’t have to go because I knew what to do. I had severe pain in my back like knives were sticking me. Then when it passed through the urethra I definitely knew it. It’s a stone with jagged little edges. Both times are was told just drink lots water and take some pain meds. The water breaks dow the stone and flushed it out. I haven’t had one in about 10 years and don’t want one ever again. I drink lots of water. Dairy products, chocolate, and soda are terrible for you that builds the calcium up. Also make sure if you exercise that you drink water. My problem was that I did not drink enough water after I exercise and dehydrated my body.

Timberlake singing that is like New Kids on the Block doing Motorhead, does not work for me. Not saying the guy doesn't have talent but stay in his own genre that I avoid like the plague.

Never had kidney stones but from what I've heard, they're way down the list and the closest thing to child birth men can experience.
