I have had kidney stones twice and it is the most pain I have ever went through. The first time I had to go to the ER and the nurse told me that now you know what childbirth is like. The second time I didn’t have to go because I knew what to do. I had severe pain in my back like knives were sticking me. Then when it passed through the urethra I definitely knew it. It’s a stone with jagged little edges. Both times are was told just drink lots water and take some pain meds. The water breaks dow the stone and flushed it out. I haven’t had one in about 10 years and don’t want one ever again. I drink lots of water. Dairy products, chocolate, and soda are terrible for you that builds the calcium up. Also make sure if you exercise that you drink water. My problem was that I did not drink enough water after I exercise and dehydrated my body.

Thanks, I have the same problem. I run on the treadmill for about an hour and work up a good sweat. I am pretty sure I do not drink enough fluids to replenish what I lost most of the time. I have Chronic Kidney disease, probably for the same reason. I have been drinking a lot of water. The pain went away for the most part yesterday with no meds. Today the nausea and pain in my left flank are increasing. I usually do not take pain meds but it is getting close.

I know it sucks but hopefully it will passed. My doctor told me to drink water to break up the stone and continue to drink water. I drink at least 60 to 80oz of water a day just so I know that I am getting enough. I hope you feel better.

Sounds like the stone shifted.

After mine was done, my doctor recommended drinking lemonade to prevent further occurrences. I don't know if that works, because I can only drink a small amount of it before I get heartburn, so I didn't really do it much.

I was told 8 glasses a water a day...it works so far.

I think it depends on what type of stone it is. There are 4 different kinds: calcium oxalate, uric acid, struvite, and cystine.
That's good information. I didn't know there were 4 different kinds. I believe my stone was the uric acid type because a couple of years later I got gout. I suffered through it before I finally got medicine for it. I haven't had a flare up since, and no other kidney stones either.

I'm glad you got the gout under control! Is gout caused by uric acid?

Yes. That's why I it made sense when you said uric acid can cause kidney stones as well. I guess the kidney stone was a precursor to my gout. When I first got gout my left big toe was in excruciating pain. A normal bedsheet laying on it hurt the toe. The gout hurt, but nothing like the pain I got from the kidney stone.

Too much calcium in our tap water in my area.
Never have been a big water drinker but we got a new boss once and he insisted that we were only allowed to have water at our workspace. So started drinking water from the tap with ice in it.

After a few months of doing that I went to the bath room one day and had trouble urinating. Then I heard a small pop and then felt pain. I peed out a kidney stone. Burned and bled some for a couple of days but it healed up.

I quit drinking the tap water. Never had one before that and never since that time.

I am just thankful that it was not one that caused me issues like you are describing. It's bad enough to have it surprise you like mine did, but to suffer with it prior to getting it out has to suck.

So maybe kidney stones should be seen as a possible warning sign?

Fortunately I never had to pass mine, but the dread of having to was always there until I got the lithotripsy.

If uric acid is the cause of stones, the first thing to eliminate is beer because beer is high in purines and high fructose drinks are as well. Some seafood like sardines and scallops as well as organ meat can also raise those levels.

That increases one's chance of kidney stones and gout. I had what my doc determined was a mild case of gout a couple of years back, a 5 on a 1-10 scale and I would not want anything greater than a 5 as that was the combination of ache and fire.

So beerware of the brew that can create stones and give you a toe out of a cartoon.

That would have been my culprit as I drank a lot of beer. Ironically, aspirin is a contributing factor and I would take aspirin to relieve the pain, which compounded the problem.

This is true...

The idea is your urine should be clear as possible...

I don't want the buggers again..
