Romo’s trade value may not be worth as much as you think

Vikings only did that trade right before the season because of injury, I don't think teams will give up anything high for Romo. At this point I'm just expecting him to be cut.
You don't think any other QBs will get injured......DAL would pay him and keep him as the backup until the trade deadline before cutting him and giving him away for nothing

I believe Dallas can get a first and 3rd for Romo.
There is no way the Cowboys would get anything close to that. The list of teams willing to make any trade is short enough already. Asking that for Romo would narrow the list to no teams and make him untradable.

well you go find me the cowboys legend/great player that they traded...and no walker doesnt count.

Its not what they do and they are not going to send romo somewhere he doesn't want to go.
DAL let Emmitt and Ware leave as FAs.....they won't forgo a #1 pick out of fondness for Romo....if he wants to keep being a QB1 then DAL is going to get value for him and trade him wherever they get the best deal

How I see it is you get what you can from your players. To me it's just the way it is. Would you rather have more picks or your franchise fail for 20years. Get all you can and keep trying to improve your team.

0% chance of that happening. NONE.

Tony Romo reportedly contemplating retirement after the 2016 season

The future is very uncertain for Tony Romo. The only thing anyone knows is that Romo is going to sit on the bench for the near future, playing the role of mentor and cheerleader for Dak Prescott, and subject to millions of close-in camera shots every time Dak does something, good or bad.

CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora reported on Sunday morning that there will be a robust trade market for Romo this offseason, with multiple teams interested in the services (the Broncos and Cardinals have been heavily bandied about) and Romo potentially fetching as much as a second-round pick.

There's also one nuclear-esque option out there: retirement. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Sunday that walking away from the game "is a consideration" for Romo.

Retiring from NFL is a 'realistic option' for Tony Romo

There’s been a lot of buzz about the Denver Broncos (or another NFL team) potentially trading for Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo in 2017. All of the talk will be a moot point if the 36-year-old quarterback decides to retire.

That’s a “realistic option” for Romo, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. The decision will depend on how the Cowboys’ season plays out and how Romo’s body feels, according to Rapoport.

++++++++++++++++

Not saying this is a done deal, or even a deal. But one thing is for sure, none of us know.

They have a history of trading Cowboy greats named Tony...

They traded Tony Dorsett to Denver.

I'm keeping Romo if your only getting a 3-4-5-6-7 rd pick. Qb's are too hard to find. Especially, having a top 10 qb like Romo is when healthy.

What if someone gave up a 3 an a 6 would you take that? I think I would. However one of the guys here says if he is released it will be an additional 5M freed up.

I'm willing to bet Tony has zero interest in staying here as Dak's backup for 2017. He loves Dallas, but he has only a little football left, and he won't want to be a backup again. No way he returns, imo, unless he is guaranteed a chance to at least compete for the starting job....and that ain't happening.
Yes but he is under contract, and the only way he can force his way out is to retire?? and that would mean he cant play 2017.
Jerry would have to let him go, and he may not want to let go just yet.
Personally I would be ok with him competing for the job. and maybe even let him have next year for one last chance to go all the way.

But a lot depends on what happens this season, if cowboys win the SB , tony might be traded or let go, and no way
he could compete for job if he stays.
if we are one and done, then that opens other possibility's.

Best case scenario is Dallas gets 4th rounder (most think it will be 6th) for Romo. But the real benefit is improved Salary Cap going forward.

Whether or not it's what they do, it's clearly what they should do.

You're acting like there's a giant list of legendary players who have gone to another team. Ask yourself how many times that has happened. Rarely, because Dallas doesn't just let players with productive years ahead of them go.

The team is in a position that doesn't come along all that often. The right move is to build the franchise, not get all sentimental and toss a good opportunity down the drain because it's pulling on your heartstrings too much.

There is no way of knowing how much we will get for trading Romo, but we hold all the cards. If there is no market we will keep him, draft another mid to late round QB (if a good one is available) and cut Sanchez and Moore (unless they think Moore is going to be the long term backup.)

I am convinced we will not give Romo away.

I think you are dead wrong on that. I guess we will know soon enough whether he will be traded or not, and so, for how much.

OK you are in charge of the Cap and I think I heard it's 25M next year
you have big contract extensions right around the corner but your
going to keep a back up QB on your payroll and pay him 25M per for 2017?

Do you know the difference between opinion and fact? That's what you would do, but more than likely not what this team would do as financially making a move earlier would benefit them more. I think he ends up getting cut before June, unless a team jumps in with a great offer.

There should be 2+ teams that will want his services. The first one to offer a 2nd wins! I don't think we can get a first rounder unless there is lots of interest.

Tony Dorsett was traded to Denver to clear the way for Walker to start.

Craig Morton was traded for the first round pick we used on Randy White. Though not a legend he did lead us to our first super bowl and was a starter for several years before Staubach. He had a 32-14 record as a starter.

Serious question- who in the Cowboys org works the phone and negotiates the trades for this team?

Schefter can purse his lips and draw. Yes, Romo will be 37 next season. And he has been unavailable for most of the last two seasons due to freakish injuries - but he was arguably the best QB in all of football only months prior to this unfortunate chain of events.

It really only takes more than one team bidding for Tony Romo's services to drive his value up. And the more players in the 'Romo sweepstakes' the higher that value will go.

Given the absolute dearth of time-wisened arm talent in the current league - I'm pretty sure this scenario will unfold. Please point to all the NFL QBs who can sling the rock better than Tony. Yeah... that's what I see, too. And rest my case.

Who care what teams value Romo at. He's under contract as a Cowboy and Jerry isn't giving him away. Dak needs a backup, and if Romo is that next year, then more the merrier. Fans are so obsessed with his salary. We always find ways to manage the cap. Next year will be no different if Romo stays.

That's a FACT my friend. Why should we give him away? My gosh, it'd be crazy to trade him for a mid to late round pick. He isn't causing any problems and frankly, we don't OWE him anything: including getting traded to a contender. I'd keep him next season for sure, unless someone blows us away with an offer (#1 or high #2 would do it)
