He doesn't, and that ultimately be what saves him.
Despite the speculation the team has not decided 100% sure what they are going to do yet.
At least I have some small hope now, but Romo seems pretty naive about Owens' inability to get separation on the field (in 2008) if this is true. He has to know that holding the ball while he's covered too many times and forcing it to him kills the team. Is Owens going to be content with taking a back seat to a younger, stronger, healthier, Roy Williams? The passing game, from the WR position, shouldn't revolve around Owens after the way he played in 2008. Tony Romo should be able to see that aspect.
It's dissappointing that Romo hasn't stood up to Owens. He yells as Gurode and gives Owens a pass on quiting on routes or loafing. That's weak leadership and a double standard. Gurode is a Pro Bowl player. If Romo isn't going to get tough with iOwens, he looks weak to the entire team. In fact, he sounded like him after the Eagles game when he incorrectly critcised Garrett's protections. Romo was making some protection call mistakes and blamed Garrett.
Romo's lack of leadership on this issue reflects Wade Phillips' weak leadership. Oh, how I wish I never defended the guy. The information Matt Mosley put out opened my eyes about Phillips. How can a head coach not assert himself when his team has adversity, on and off the field? It's pathetic. I wish Jason Garrett was the head coach now.
This is why players don't make these choices. Management should make these types of decisions. It's over the players' heads. Players can be clueless or play tough guy when it comes to these types of things. They all better think long and hard about how Miles Austin is going to be affected by this decision. I wish Romo would remember Miles Austin when he thought about Owens. I wish Romo would assert himself in regards to Owens' toxic nature in the locker room.
My faith in Romo's leadership is suspect at best.
The WR positon needs to be shook up in a big way. Patrick Crayton's attitude and big mouth can be replaced by a draft pick and Sam Hurd and Felix Jones.
