This season has increasingly seen pundits, even ESPNs', proclaiming Romo as a bonafide elite QB. Many ranking him "weekly" as #2-#3. For years upon years he has been the black sheep, with people not only not accepting him but not wanting to accept him, remember the Brady Quinn > Tony Romo crew? The Mark Sanchez > Tony Romo crew? It sounds comedic that these were once the preeminent opinions of national pundits. It seems like after a near decade of him making them look like fools they have finally accepted him for what he is - an elite quarterback in the National Football League.

I am happy with Romo thus far this year, but in all honestly, I haven't heard anyone call him elite - probably because he is not.

He is simply very good and doing a very good job this year. It should continue as well as the schedule is favorable.

I've definitely seen the Mark Sanchez arguments back when he went to the AFC Championship a couple of times.

If they hated Romo, they will continue to do so. Even if he wins a SB, they will just hide in mountains, caves and the sewer....make rare appearances and talk about Dez or somebody up and coming...then next season, when he throws his first int, that's when satan and his henchmen return.

He's a damn good QB. What would happen if Romo had a defense that was a top 5? Top 10? Match this with his production and what would you get? I'd like to know? Anyone here think we are 5-1 with a defense like Seattle? I do.

I think your wrong here. Brees was highly criticized until he won a SB. Don't get me wrong. Bree's is an awesome QB, but the naysayers ran away after he won. I think the same would happen for Romo.

People have short-term memories. I think it was when Romo outplayed the media-proclaimed greatest QB of all time in the midst of his greatest season ever. If Romo has a 4 INT game this week, they'll go back to saying he's the 15th/16th best QB in the NFL.

Well, the Romo haters have it both ways then. Because they can dog him and dog him, call him names, attach phony game situations to him, but when/if he wins a SB, they will all sit down at the same dinner table with the fans that root for him along.

Having that cake and eat it too. Must be nice.

I really like Romo and really wish he'd win us the big one so we could begin suggesting such a title but the reality is he's a very good QB who usually wilts in the game's biggest moments. To say he is "elite" in the sense that Peyton, Brady, and Brees are, is simply ridiculous. He's perennially been an upper middle tier QB and I see no reason to upgrade his ranking this year other than there are some other middle-tier QBs turning in some real stinkers of a season thus far....Roth, Eli, RGIII, Matt Ryan, etc. So maybe Romo is top 10 this year due to relativity, but elite he is not. If Romo wins some playoff games (he has to get there first) and a SB or gets close..then maybe I'll revisit my opinion. Until then....good QB but choker

What's going to happen the season after he retires we will watch his replacement play. On that play a free blitzer will come free and we'll automatically expect a spectacular move to avoid rush and throw for some spectacular play. Instead, we'll more and likely see a rushed pass that leads to an INT or a sack and at that moment we will think to ourselves "Romo would have made that play"

Brees had a different career though. If my memory serves correctly, Brees was thought to be somewhat of a bust, which is why San Diego spent the 1st overall pick (4th after trade) on Phillip Rivers. You wouldn't spend a top 4 pick on a QB if you already had a good, relatively young QB. I know Brees had injury issues as well (which is why Miami didn't sign him after he left San Diego). But I remember San Diego thought he was a bust so they drafted Rivers. Then his last season with them (which was Rivers rookie year) Brees played unbelieveably.

Romo, on the other hand, was an undrafted free agent, came out of nowhere to become starting QB for the Cowboys, then consistently choked in big moments. If you remember correctly, everyone was in love with Romo his first season as a starter. He only played a little over half the season and still made the Pro Bowl by a landslide (his only Pro Bowl, I think). Then, he brings his team to the playoffs and bobbles a field goal snap in a loss to Seattle. I think everyone felt bad for him after that, but then it happened again, and again, and you know the rest. I think, the way people are, they just started enjoying seeing Romo fail in humiliating fashion. Since then he's had this stigma as a choke artist. It also doesn't help that he plays for the Dallas Cowboys.

5-1? More like 6-0...we lost to KC by 1, we couldn't stop SD and we lost on a last second FG to Den....all of them were winnable if the D stepped up (they did play pretty well in the KC game, is that your loss?)

Get a good enough defense and Trent Dilfer will win you a Superbowl.

I don't disagree but it's not like you even need to be a damn good QB with a defense that only gives up 14 points per week. He has the skill players. He has the improved OL that everyone said he lacked. Now he needs a Top 5 defense? What QB couldn't succeed with a top 5 defense, a good OL and a plethora of skill players to throw to? QBs who play in those circumstances are often more along the lines of game managers than they are high level production machines.

Romo is good enough to win with but he's also not without his faults. For the first half of last season the defense played pretty well. I think they were Top 10 almost to the midway point and yet the team was losing games, largely because the offense was sinking the ship.

Before he'll be considered elite, he'll really need some signature wins. As of now, he's really not won anything worth talking about. What's sucks is that he's running out of time, I'm not sure that he's going to get a lot of opportunities.

Peyton manning is the poster child for this
He came into the league as one of the most heralded QBs but after losing to the pats twice in post season everyone said that Peyton could not win the big one (just like they are about Tony) then he won the SB and all of that went away

If romo wins a SB or at least has a couple of trips to NFC CG s then people wi start to think of him as a truly great QB

Until then, no

Would you prefer they continue to piss on him even after he won a Superbowl?

You can say this about lots of teams though. That's the beauty of the NFL. You have two sides of a team (three if you want to include special teams). No team is ever elite on offense and defense. You need to be dominant in one area and pretty good in the other. But it's hard to know how and where to invest talent. There's no exact science.

The Saints with a great defense win the Super Bowl. The 49ers and Seahawks with a great offense win. Dallas with a great defense. Patriots with a great defense. Broncos with a great defense. Chiefs with a great offense. I can go on and on. No team is perfect. The key is to minimize your flaws, or to be so good at one thing that you win in spite of your flaws.
