It starts out with a fair amount of coach speak, but keep listening and you can get a glimpse into what Lineman has meant for Romo's season. In my opinion, we have to keep Lineman at all costs.

That's a really big difference between this year and years past. It just never seemed like the play worked as it was drawn up and it took Romo doing Romo things to have any success. These days? It seems like the play just works as it was drawn up and when it doesn't? Romo is still there to make magic happen.

I like the addition of Scott Linehan.

But I think some are overstating his impact. How do you separate how much of the improvement is the addition of Martin, maturation of Leary, Frederick, Dez, Murray. Murray's health, Romo's continued growth etc. Yes, the passing game tends to work better when you have a top 5 running game.

The play calling is night and day different and I'm not just talking about the run-pass ratio. Yet there was only one player added to the offense, so it'd be a stretch to argue anyone is overstating the impact of Linehan.

Agreed. Linehan has good timing. If he came to Dallas 4 years ago he'd be a bum who doesn't know how to call plays much less run an offense.

There's nothing here. He's a solid OC. The same guy he was in Detroit. What Romo says about him is standard fluff that fans cling to. It actually means nothing. He praises all the coaches he's ever had.

Agreed. hes a good coordinator. He's is a part of the Cowboys success this year but he is not the reason for it.

Our offensive line forcing the defense to play 9 men in the box has the most to do with Romo's success this season.

Is supposedly the same playbook Garrett had but with the addition of JUST ONE PLAYER (Martin) this team goes from giving us fits to giving opposing teams fits. IMO it's more Linehan having a better feel for calling a game than Garrett, he also doesn't panic and go all Air Coryall if their down 7 points. Whatever it is Im happy with it and just want things to stay this way next year. Seems we get a little success and everyone is willing to let the people creating the success because "anyone would have this success with this setup". Yeah right ask Hambrock how many rushing titles he won behind Emmitts line.

Is having an OC/playcaller unencumbered by any other responsibilities (O-line or HC) a better structure? I just think this belief that the ONLY thing different with our offense is +Martin & +Linehan is overly simplistic.

We have a good thing going right now. IMO, for multiple reasons. I hope that remains undisturbed. But I don't worry that if Linehan leaves we'll return to 2013.

Well, if those guys on the OL hadnt improved it would be a concern, but there is a night and day difference in how this offense has played that only would get blown off by the staunchest of all Red supporters. That would be the Red Praisers who had him in the HOF the past few years.

All of a sudden after YEARS it suddenly clicked with the same basic group of guys? Uh, . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Im not buyin that. I may have been born at night, but not last night.

While I do agree that being in the right place at the right time makes a difference, it also takes the right coach calling the right plays for a team to succeed. Much like Brandon Carr saying Dallas had a bad defensive game plan in place against Detroit last year.

Would Garrett be having the same success with this offense if he had remained coordinator? I absolutely don't believe he would. Some coaches have a good feel for what to call and others don't. That doesn't make Garrett a bad coach (in fact, I think he's a good head coach), just not a good coordinator.

Now, I do think there are other good coordinators who would have had just as much success, but I'm just glad we brought in one instead of sticking with Garrett's play-calling.

I'll tell you:

Lest my position be misconstrued, did I give Linehan credit? Uhhh, yeah, I did.

I also give credit to other changes as well. Not only the addition of Martin, but the maturation of 2 (essentially) rookies from the previous year (Fred & Leary), a 21 year old in Tyron, and the gelling of those players as well. No one talked about this line in 2013 as being one of the leagues best. Everyone DREAMED of what Romo could do if he had time in the pocket. And in 2014 we saw what could happen.

Kudos to Linehan for overseeing and contributing to all that. But I doubt we'll be anymore dead in the water if he leaves than we were on offense after Norv Turner left.

And Garrett's name wasn't mentioned once. How bout that?

Can you comment on that playcalling with specific examples? Or are you like most where you can not comment on route combinations but instead can only comment on how you 'feel' about it with maybe some commentary on Sturm's tally of formation usage.

Playcalling is a favorite handwaving target because you 'see' what you think you see. The notions are not mutually exclusive yet I see quite a bit of overestimation of impact relative to the performance of the players on the field.

Bryant is playing better. Hanna worked hard on his strength and it shows. Murray and Romo have been relatively healthy. Fred and Leary are doing much better in their second year as starters with awareness and technique. And the 'one player' is having the best rookie OL performance of at least the past 15 years.
