Romo Weak Arm?

Don't think he has the strongest arm but doubt it's the weakest. He's underthrown lot of times but he's also overthrown a lot too. He also led the NFL in most completed passes 20 yards or more in 07; around 54+. Don't forget there is a reason why the Cowboys scored more TDs (except for the Pats) then any othe team in the NFL. So exactly how many throws did Romo miss that you feel he should have completed to win games?

But agree Favre was perceived to have the strongest arm before he retired; but he also lacked accuracy with it which is why het set the NFL record for INTs. It was the strength of his game. He could hit a WR 70 yards down the field--think it was one of those long passes to WRs Jennings? which enabled Packers to come from behind to beat the Broncos in closing minute of the game. He was trying to throw deep against our secondary early in Cowboys-Packer game but Hamlin (I believe) picked it off.

Aikman had a very successful career cause, while he had a really good arm, , his short to intermediate game was great & he could hit the quick slants/outs, etc. anywhere on the field. Jason Garrett had a beautiful deep ball--partly because he understood how to use the air to get more trajectory. Garrett could certainly teach Romo to make those throws if he felt it was important. OTOH, Garrett couldn't make it as a starter cause he lacked real arm strength to rifle the ball across the field before the defender could get there & make a play on it--it took too long for Garretts ball to get to his WR in comparison with Aikman.

Do believe Romo's game is probably the deep intermediate pass (which he loves to throw and it shows) which he amazingly accurate at whether in the pocket or on the run--latter is something most NFL QBs cannot do. Romo more then makes up for any perceived lack of arm strength by numerous other strengths which most QBs can't do. Most DCs scheme against Romo to stop/limit his big-play ability & aren't usually successful.

Don't forget it was the ability of the Giant defense to bring pressure on Romo in the 2nd half of the playoff game so he didn't have time to make those big plays he usually makes. Also don't forget the Giant defense was able to bring same pressure on Favre in the playoff game & Brady in the SB; neither of them could make the winning play either with their perceived stronger arms then Romo. Let's face the real reality. If Crayton hadn't screwed up twice, he'd have caught 2 TDs; if Fasano hadn't screwed up there's another TD; if (can't remember who our other WR was) hadn't screwed up there would have been a 4th TD by Romo & we'd have blown the Giants away. Maybe that's one reason why Fasano isn't with the team any more & everybody's been screaming about Crayton whose been amazingly quiet since the game.

BTW: Romo didn't have any trouble getting the deep ball to Terry Glenn; but then Romo didn't have Glenn available in 07. And Hurd & Crayton sure didn't give Romo many chances to throw deep--since both lack speed & Austin hasn't shown he can consistently catch anything. We do know that Jerry Jones wants to add another WR to the Cowboys to play opposite TO & who can stretch the field--in other words go deep. Doubt Cowboys want such a WR if they didn't think Romo could hit him down the field. Give Romo a WR who can consistently go deep & can catch the ball and I bet you'll find he more often then not well hit him on the money.

What's he talking about, then? Arm wrestling? Bicep curls?

Of course he's talking about Romo's throwing arm, which is measured by ball speed.

C'mon guys, give the guy a break. He's just giving his opinion and its not like he's trying to insult Romo. But I do have to agree to a certain extent...It did seem like he couldnt get that long ball far enough towards the end of the season.... Maybe that was cus of that thumb injury he sustained late in the season.... I remember he was pretty off for a couple of games, but I kinda blame the thumb... Have you ever tried throwing a football with a jammed thumb? It makes a huge difference in distance and accuracy as opposed to a healthy thumb...But.....and its a big BUT.... Tony Romo is a special QB. He's a winnner. He is a guy that who knows how to win a football game. He never gives up, and leaves everything out on the field... Thats more than I can say for most QB's in the NFL.... I'm just saying Tony makes up for his physical disadvantages with his scrambling ability and elusiveness. That my friend is something you cannot have a game plan for. When it turns into street ball it comes down to whos bigger, stronger, faster, smarter, and luckier. And Guys.... Look at our Damn team... We are F***ing SCARY!! We are now the bullies you know.

IMO We have all the tools this year to realistically be the Superbowl Champs . When was the last time you could say that coming into a season???? We are loaded on Offense, and even more loaded on Defense... GOD I CAN'T WAIT TILL FOOTBALL SEASON STARTS!!!!

Im going to put down $100 in Vegas for the Cowboys to take the SuperBowl this year.... Unfortunatly my odds will be higher this year.. so less money.

Sago, I have to say that I've never really responded to any of your posts, and I've read tons of your stuff, you're a smart guy. Keep up the good posts.

Let me add another thing in for the case of Romo. Let's not forget this guy played with 1 great receiver and a TE, that's it! No real threat player out of the backfield, no huge threat at WR on the other side, and still put up monster numbers, I think we're spoiled.

Of course he's talking about Romo's throwing arm, which is measured by ball speed.

Well if Romo does have some flaw in his throwing motion when targeting WRs deep then it could cause more of a loose spiral, which could cause the ball to "die" and lose speed quicker. Also he may not be able to judge the necessary trajectory correctly, causing him to leave the ball hanging in some cases. Just two situations where ball speed at release isn't necessarily an indications of a players "in game" arm strength.

Onfieldrush and possibly Shooterware are a couple of phonies. Probably foreskin fan(s), posing as good guys trying to to start something out of nothing, as if we are going to march on Jerry's house with torches demanding he do something about Romo's weak arm. What garbage. Go back to extreme foreskins and then, please drink a nice glass of Clorox.

Not sure if they are phony fans trying to stir up stuff, not sure if they are or are not Commanders fans.

However I do find it funny that they share the same computer. Heck maybe they are one person and backing up the initial post with a different username.

Some of you jumped on this guy for no legitimate reason. It's a valid question.

Romo has earned all of the accolades that he gets. I wondered a lot when he first came into the game whether or not his unorthodox playing style would make it in the NFL. So many people compared him to Favre and that cheesehead was a turnover machine (albeit a GREAT QB to have). Few people can play that style of game and still put up winning numbers. It usually bites them in the backside so bad that they lose far too many games. Favre did not lose more than his share. Neither has Romo obviously.

The good news is that what ever Romo's arm strength is, he seems to play to it. I know arm strength is important but understanding what you strengths and liabilities are, and playing to those, is much more important.

No one roots harder for Romo than I do. I had thought that Henson would be our strating QB by now because I bought into the pedigree hype. Thank God I was wrong.

Romo's play thrills me and scares me to death all at the same time.

Coming out of college, Romo's passes were clocked at 57 mph.

Joe Flacco had the strongest arm in the draft this year. He threw 58 mph.

Arm strength is over rated IMHO. For every great QB with a questionable arm I can name 5 or 6 guns who went no where (of course there are probably just as many weak arms that went no where as well).

Montana, far from great arm strength but ranks as one of the greatest QB's of all time, same with Fouts. Greise had a weak arm yet he's in the HOF and has 2 rings.

Marino had a rocket arm but no Superbowl rings yet weak armed Trent Dilfer does (yeah I know he was just a bus driver). Vick's arm strength and mobility were suppose to make him the next great thing, regardless of his current stay at the hotel Leavenworth he struggled, strong arm and all. Jeff Geaorge, arm by NASA and body by lego, nodda. Randall Cunningham had one heck of an arm, no rings. Jay Schroeder, anyways. Kyle Boller threw a ball 65 yards thru the uprights from one kneee, hows that workin out for him in Baltimore?

I agreee Romo doesnt have the strongest arm in the NFL but his arm is adequate for the system we use. If it wasnt would he have gotten that big contract.

Bottom line its not about strength its about touch.

I mean he underthrew wr's plenty of times this year, the obvious 1 against the giants underthrowing owens for the game winning td on the last drive but it wasnt jus that. All season he has been underthrowing wr's and if usually when you dont have a very good nfl arm when you try to throw it hard it fludders which i seen plenty of times throughout the season. Im preety sure we didnt throw alot of deep ball's because romo cant get it there with the accuracy. This is just my opinion but i want to know what you guys think of tony's arm strenth i think it's average at best, just looking back at all the big plays we could have had werent converted mainly becuase of his arm strength. He needs to get it stronger forsure. I remember brady coming out he had a good arm but it seems now he has a dart and he didnt have that 5-6 years ago. Your thoughts?
It's just you.

k19 beat me to it. I watched many of Montana's games and both his and Romo's arm strength are comparable. So, the debatable issue really isn't about arm strength and never truly was.

Agreed... somewhat...

I think he can improve his distance by setting properly as well.... he cannot wing it.. yet he tries.

Romo CAN get the deep ball out there but all has to done correctly to get the pass off.

- Footwork
- get it out a tad early
- timing with WR

I say that because HE CAN get the deep ball up and out and completed

He probably has one of the weaker arms for a starter in the league. Definitely the weakest arm of any of the NFC East starters. However, he can just about make every throw in the game, except for the cross field out pattern...but few can make that throw and it's a dangerous throw anyway. Watch other QB's and he's far more accurate than most of the starters in the league. While he may have the occasional underthrow on the deep ball, there's plenty of starters who miss the deep ball far more often and are far less accurate on the short and intermediate stuff. That being said, Romo's underthrows usually have nothing to do with pure arm strength and more to do with poor footwork when he does underthrow them.

YAKUZA

I have been saying that for the last year and a half and have been getting blasted for saying it.

Its true. His arm isnt much better than Chad Pennington but he makes it up with his quick release and ability to create while out of the pocket.

It must be you. Granted Romo does not have the biggest arm in the NFL but by no means does he have a weak arm. As for throwing the deep balls that has more to do with timing than it does arm strength. Tony has shown he can through the toughest pass in the NFL which is a deep out his arm is strong enough to do the job.
