There's also a reason he has a career 74 passer rating with 5 minutes or less to go in the 4th quarter and either tied or down by less than 7 points.
Its because he's not that darn good in the clutch.
This is the most intentionally misleading stat to come down the pike in a long time, courtesy of FOX Sports.
They tell you Romo's rating is 74, then give that number no context. So you assume it's a low number. It's not. Truth is, it's actually well above average.
If you take the 32 QB with the most attempts in this situation (5 minutes or less to go in the 4th quarter and either tied or down by less than 7 points), Romo ranks 10th out of 32.
Any stat in which a player or team ranks 10th out of 32 is a good stat for that player. He's one of the top 10 QB in the NFL over his career in these situations. And remember, FOX picked the parameters that would give Romo the lowest rating possible. If you change the situation to "2 minutes or less" Romo moves up to 5th. If you make it "8 minutes or less" he moves up to 6th. You finally just have to conclude that he's very good in these situations.
Despite the best efforts of the good folks at FOX and what they want you to believe.
