I do believe there is a great deal of the mental aspect to it when we get into these tight games in December. If something goes wrong it's almost like you can see it in their body language with a 'here we go again' sort of way of carrying themselves.

We've hung on and won close games this year when things have gone wrong. December has nothing to do with the team's mental state. It might be that we've got key players worn down at the end of the season, but with the possible exception of the OL, I don't really see any evidence of that happening, either. This team is still playing hard, and I thought the last game in particular was a good indication that we don't give up. I do think we've got a mental block against NY right now, but that's about it.

December does have something to do with this team's mental state if for no other reason then that is all they hear about. Even it it wasn't a problem at first the constant attention paid to it can and will make it a problem.

You damn well better believe when the opposing offense takes the field in the late stages of the game this defense is remembering the many times in the last few years they have given up long, game winning drives after controlling the play for most of the game.

Something has to change and benching a starter for a legit reason might get the guys thinking more about their individual responsibilities rather then gripping their sticks to tight (to borrow a hockey metaphore) and focusing on not letting the past repeat.

In other words. Something has to be done to get this team looking forward instead of backwards.

Jimmy was great at that.

I believe past failures in December really haunt this team mentally.

They could really exorcise some demons by defeating the Saints this Saturday.

I agree to a point but......

When you have 3 chances from the 1 yard line and you don't get in the endzone, that is not a past failure mentally besetting them

and:

When you have 3rd and 12 to get the Chargers off the field and one player ( I will blame Newman here) does not do his job and they convert I don't think that is the mental challenge that is besetting them.

In the Giants game for example: in 2 series and 2 other plays the Cowboys gave up 28 points. That is not enough time for them to think about their past failures to effect them, although you could argue foir the last two series for the first half against the Giants.

Personally I think it is just a lack of concentration and focus and I don't know where to place the blame for that!

I am not for benching Terrence Newman during the game - make him run with the seciond team in practice would be just fine with me though. That would embarrass him in front of his teamates and light a fire.

No way you bench Flozell. One fine he got was for the tripping on Tuck and if he does not trip him, Romo could have been the one out for weeks. I don't know how you could bench him for the Tuck pushing either - there is some crazy stuff that goes on in the trenches and we have no idea what was going on between the two of them.

You going to bench Witten for the false starts? I don't think that no fear of getting benched is the problem here!

The problem is that nobody on this roster is afraid of losing their job.

Nobody gets benched.

While I do agree with that argument somewhat, it is ridiculous to think of it being a factor before playing a 13-0 team.

I like how the homers in this thread are admitting in a roundabout way that this team isn't any good. Apparently the teams we lose to are just better. Isn't what the realists are saying is that the Cowboys aren't nearly as good as what some of you would to like believe?
