I don't know enough about his contract to know what would happen should we have to release him or trade him. I do know a lot of contracts are more about the up front and guaranteed money and not the backend. What's the story with his contract and how would it affect us either next year or the following to release him?

That's the true cost. And if the uncertainty of RBs in this league you need more than one effective runner. I wouldn't get rid of him until its time and cost effective.
