Rosenthal: 11 Current Players on the HOF Bubble

Out of the three QB on that list Romo and Rivers is a decent discussion for who is better. I suspect if you dive down into the numbers on a per game basis Romo will be better. Eli is the worst QB of the three but the most likely to get into the HOF because he has two rings. And frankly the standard sportswriter doesn't want to dive into stats too often, because that's a skill set that most of them just don't have. They frequently want the narrative to be handed to them. The two rings for Eli makes a simple narrative all tied up with a bow. Maybe by the time he's eligible there will be some better voted for the HOF, but I'm not holding my breath just yet.

Eli's a borderline HOFer but those 2 SB's probably get him in depending on what he does from here on out.

Danny White only started 92 games. His INT to TD ratio was about 1.15 to 1.
Romo has 127 starts and a TD to INT ratio of better than 2 to 1.

Those aren't numbers that rely upon insane passing of today such as passing yards or passing TDs where he blows White out of the water totally.
Among current QB, a good comparison to White would be Matt Ryan. Neither one a top 5 QB, both better than average in the regular season and a little worse than average in the playoffs.

You can always tell which team's fans have been deprived the thrill of playoff success.

There is only one way a player makes the Hall of Fame without significant success in the playoffs. His productivity would have to transcend even the best players during his era.
He would literally have to define his position during the time he played.

Examples wiuld include Dan Fouts, San Marino, and Barry Sanders.

In order to make the Hall of Fame Tony Romo would have to get a ring, just one. That would sufficiently erase the only knock on him that he couldnt win in the playoffs.

Being a great player in forgetable games will not make a player memorable. The great games, the ones everybody remembers are played in January. The great players are remembered for what they did on those plays.

Try this test.....

Name meTony Romo's "signature" game. What is the play he made that will be remembered for all tIme by all fans in the NFL.?

Hopefully, the answer will come straight off the top of your head by this time next year, it will ne a play from the upcoming postseason.

I think if Romo can get to a Superbowl, even if he doesn't win it, he's a lock (not 1st ballot, but he makes it).

I think if Romo can get a NFC Championship game, and gets' no further than that, he has slightly better than a 50% chance of making it.

If his career ended today, I don't like his chances.

I understand the argument that he has consistently been a top 10 QB in the league (by QB rating) -- however, I believe he is going to need more playoff victories to make him a viable HOF candidate.

Beyond that, Romo has never been named 1st team All-Pro and only been named 2nd team All-Pro just one time. I think that will hurt his case as well.

He'll probably go down as one of the best QB not in the HOF, unless something like the above happens, or he stays healthy enough to put up three more top-10 seasons. With 25 quarterbacks in the HOF, it would be hard to ignore something that only he and 5-6 other QB had done.

But right now, it doesn't look like any of those things is likely to take place. And no, he doesn't get in if he hangs' em up today.

Romo ranks up with the greats statistically--he can't help that he played on bad teams. Don't mention that tired crap about winning SBs--those are team awards. Being great on a bad team is actually a point in his favor.
I love Romo, but you can call the 2007 Cowboys anything but a bad team.

Garrett is the HC, buck stops with him. I also do not remember Linehan being there since 2010 and Garrett's record even before last year without Romo was abysmal.

Linehan is the play caller. He's responsible for this offense being bad without Romo as well. The defense overachieved. So does Garrett get credit for this defense overachieving last season?

sure why not, but they still won a whopping 4 games and without Romo, they won one game.

Yeah.
I guess I didn't read it as if he was saying every single team he played on was bad.

I think we'd all agree that '07 was maybe the most balanced team he has been on.

  • It was his 1st full season starting
  • They went 13-3
  • The lost in a very tight game to the eventual SB Champions...and scored more points on them than the 18-0 Pats did in the SB.
  • Nothing to be ashamed of there....despite what some here may say.
