Whew, that was a stinker! Probably the biggest areas of concern are 1) Backup swing tackle 2) backup QB and 3) special teams. The defense looks MUCH improved and hopefully the offense gets enough reps to click early, cause they are still our engine.

I think some people made the roster and some people got booted last night:

1) Davon Coleman made the roster. The guy was making plays everywhere, against first and second teams. This means either Ken Bishop or T. McClain get cut. Bishop likely goes to the practice squad.

2) Ryan Russell made the team. They already wanted to keep him bc of his draft status and potential, but he's flashed in both games. Problem is, Gardner played very well too. I'm thinking we have to keep 10 linemen (DLaw, Hayden, Crawford, Crawford, Mincey, Gregory, T. McClain, Coleman, Russell, Gardner)... then when Hardy comes back, we have to cut a guy with a lot of potential. Unless maybe we cut T. McClain.

3) 10 linemen means NO 3rd string QB. Vaughan is too immobile for the NFL. He lacks touch on short passes. He gets scared when he gets hit. He flashes at times, but I think it's apparent he's nothing more than a mediocre career backup. Don't cut Ben Gardner for him.

4) i'd keep Keith Smith. Outside of Wilson, he has flashed the most. Wilber gets way too much love around here. He sucked at middle linebacker last night. He's only serviceable at strongside and can't play weak cause he's too slow. He's ok at special teams but that's about it. I don't think i'd cut Wilber until after McClain comes back, but he's the one I'd cut before K. Smith. Smith looks like a baller. Did last year too. Plus he seems to have the physical skills. So, we keep Lee, Hitchens, Wilson, Gachkar, Brinkley, Smith, Wilber

5) We only have one RB. McFadden has no vision. Problem is, Randle can't pass block. He might get Romo killed.

6) Cut Weems and sign a backup off the street or move Martin to get some RT reps. Again, this is our biggest weakness

7) Hardy had not shown up or looked special AT ALL. The rust is thick. He needs a lot more reps, esp since he will have to sit again.

I also think:

8) I hate the way we are playing scared this pre-season. Mo needs reps. Lee and Hardy haven't played in 18 months. They need reps. Romo needs reps (all QBs do). The oline needs reps together. How come Garrett won't sit anybody in a meaningless regular season game before the playoffs and he plays scared now, when we have more time to get healthy and the games after aren't as crucial? I think this sends the wrong message.

9) I'm worried that all the intensity we hear about at practice is hype and/or is misdirected. We have looked sloppier and less intense than both teams we have played. We have problems historically dealing with success. The circus comes into town and everyone gets too high on themselves. I'm worried this has happened again.

I wasn't able to see the game....no TV coverage in my area. Had to listen on Sirius radio. I hope it looked better than it sounded.

I didn't think Randle was terrible at pass blocking. Out side of 1 holding call of course.

Even when he made the block, he had bad technique and would likely have been bowled over by better rushers. He needs to take the action to them. He sits back and waits for them to come and then flinches too much

He graded out a better pass blocker than the guy starting in Philly.

Agree on Wilbur, he is fast becoming the "golden cock" of the linebacking crew.

We looked absolutely horrible.

Only bright spots were:

Gregory is about 2 years ahead of schedule. Can't remember a rookie showing this much technique this early on

Russell

Keith Smith

Corey White - Extend his contract right now

Joseph Randle looking like a skilled runner

QB's are awful.. Absolutely awful.

Good stuff. Agree on most of this as far as roster predictions.

As far as preseason goes and the whole "rust" bs. Nah can't disagree more. The preseason is a complete joke at this point. I don't want ANY veterans playing and risking injuries. So a couple of series in August is gonna prevent rust?? Don't think so. I've seen teams and players time and time again have great preseasons and then disappear when the real games begin. It's meaningless. The rust will have to be knocked off during the season. Keep em healthy is the only important thing this staff has to do this preseason in my opinion.

After watching the ENTIRE game I came to one conclusion: Garrett is not interested in winning preseason games. His game plan is like a fire drill; he tells his guys to go out there and make plays. That's it.

I sure hope they can make some sense out of last night's mess because I sure can't. I do know, though, they were able tho evaluate a lot of talent.

Agreed, We had approx 7-10 starters sit this one out...not sure what everyone expected. Redball has no inclination to win these games, see GB and Pittsburgh major injuries for reasons why.

I think the infamous turf at Levi's Stadium had a lot to do with a lot of players getting no reps at all. Garrett will get most of them out there on our home turf next week, with the actual goal being to have everyone ready for the Giants and Eagles week 1 and 2.

Wilbur looks slow to react and has no speed to chase down a play

I think Wilber is a core ST guy, so he has an advantage come roster cut time.

As for playing scared.....out last two games are at home.
Combine that with it being week 3 and you'll see full go with the starters this Saturday, imo.

Also, check out the injury thread.

Didn't see the first half yesterday, did Hardy actually stink up the joint or is this hyperbole in OP?

I quibble with the notion that Romo needs the reps.

He only threw 5 passes last year against the Ravens in the 2nd preseason game.

I only watched the first half. Did vaughan melt down in the second? I thought he was good in the first. Randle looked good. I like coleman a lot he seemed to be always making a play. Defense was great in the first.
