Everyone knows I am Patrick Peterson's future father-in-law and thus I have an overpowering agenda for him to land in Dallas.

If he makes it to #6 I do believe he will end up a Dallas Cowboy in a trade up. I would be ecstatic with this. I consider him to be a top 5 talent in this Draft. In fact, I consider him to be the #1 talent in this draft. I just know that teams ahead of the Cowboys need to make QB and DL huge priorities.

What does this have to do with Tyron Smith?

It is my firm belief and has been for some time that if Peterson is gone Smith is our pick. Whether we try to trade down and still get him or simply take him at #9 is open to debate. I think we will simply take him if he is there since rumors of Detroit interest are cropping up.

Tyron Smith is the most likely player to end up being Dallas' pick. Why do I say this if I am correct in thinking that Peterson is the top player on their Draft board? Quite simply, he is a special player that we may not have a shot at and Smith is number two on our board.

How good is he or can he be? Let me put it to you this way. If he had not declared for the Draft I firmly believe he would be a top 5 pick next year.

In other words, no matter which guy we end up with, it is going to be great for us as fans of this team who want to see us improve.

Many will ask if you would take a RT that high? That is where he played at USC and yes I would. if they move him to LT and Free back to RT so be it. I don't care as long as he produces.

Now, if you really want to make me happy...figure out a way for me to have both guys. Peterson at #6 for our #9 and #71. Tyron Smith at 12 or 13 for our #40 and next's #1.

I'd be on that like a fat kid on cake.

i'm not a PP homer like you Hos but i'm slowly coming around on him. I'm just worried about all the talk that FS may be his best spot. Of all the top cb's that have gone in that area i dont recall one ever being touted as a FS. Now, if he ends up being Eric Berry or Earl Thomas then great but for such a premium trade up i would like a guaranteed(as much as it can be) cover corner, not a guy who could end up going to FS.

BTW i am all aboard the Tyron Smith bandwagon @9. We have ignored OL for far too long and it appears this year that we have the pick of the crop. i want him badly in Big D and is ee him doing on the right side what Free did for us on the left.

Q for you Hos - is the trade up to 6 from info you have gathered. I know we are high on PP but wondered about the trade notion.

Hostile, Peterson could be gone for sure (I hope that he is gone), but I'm not so sure that he will not be there at 6. Again, if he is there at 6, Dallas has over rated him a bit. That should be proof. Smith should be rated ahead of Peterson in this draft for the Cowboys. I bet New England has Smith rated higher.

I think Smith and Quinn and Green can be just as big of a star in the league at their respective positions as Peterson can be. They all play marquee positions and Smith and Quinn are just 20 years old.

Again, I think you underestimate Cleveland not wanting to lose their player to Tennessee or San Francisco in a trade down, and Jason Garrett most likely covets Smith more, I think. I think Jason Garrett would over rule a trade up for Peterson and put his foot down and start to rebuild the offensive line with the blue chip Smith.

If you trade down and let Miami jump Minnesota for Mallet, the Vikings will almost certainly take Smith. They may take him anyway. The Commanders, Vikings, Lions, Chargers, Patriots, Giants, Eagles, Colts, are all major threats to take Smith if available.

Smith will not get past Minnesota and Detroit.

You are right about saying that Dallas would probably just take Smith at 9.

Woo, how to answer this without getting myself in trouble. Yes, I've heard rumblings that we could go up to get him with either Arizona or Cleveland. One I consider to be very solid. The other is less so, but still practical.

Patrick Peterson carries the highest rating the Cowboys have had on a player in years. Now, let me define that real quick. Player they think they can get. For instance, I am not telling you they rate him higher than say Suh last year. They knew they could not get Suh, so this is about players that they have within reach. So I'm saying here that they have him rated higher than Newman, Williams, and Maryland, all players we have taken very high. Probably have him rated at or near the level we had Aikman.

I hope that made sense.

I definitely do not agree with the comments about him as a FS. Those are due strictly to his weight, not his abilities. He is the best looking CB I have seen coming out of the Draft since possibly Deion. Yes, I went there. He's big. He's fast. He's physical. He goes and gets the football. In 2 years he will be the best CB in the NFL and he will stay there for a long time. That is my completely biased opinion. I confess my agendas when I have them. He is mine.

I was under the impression you couldn't trade picks for next years draft without a CBA?

I agree with a lot of what you said. I've been hard on Smith, mostly because I don't feel the tape matches the hype (and I still feel that way), but TE potential is there.

You know... I tend to lean towards moving up and giving up extra to get the players that your scouting department tells you will be special. I always have.

Of course, the scenario you mention is very unlikely to happen, but if it did, I too would be thrilled.

Two players who Dallas thinks will be dominant players, in the same draft would be awesome. And when you think about it, rarely do you get more than a couple of guys from a draft that will make an impact on your team anyway. So many mid to late round guys just aren't what you think they will be.

My point is, I'm all for targeting guys that you think are going to be difference makers and then doing what you have to do to get some of them on your team.

You have heard that T Smith is #2 on the Cowboys draft board?

thanks for the heads up. As i said i'm coming round on him but if he's such a great talent i cant see him sliding to 6. Maybe the 9ers would even move up to get him earlier than their 7th pick. Clements is on the way out i believe.
Anyway roll on april 28th

We shall see, but I hope Peterson is gone and makes it a non issue.

If Arizona drops to 9, they are most likely going to take Smith. That should tell Dallas that they have over rated Peterson.

What if S.F. wants to drop out of 7 and move down. Cleveland could lose their player there, too?

Bowers will most likely drop out of the top 10.

The only reason he could slide is the lockout. I am being serious, we are in the cat bird seat right now because of the needs and impending obstacles for the teams ahead of us. It would take a miracle, but he can slide. CBs often do. Teams do reach for QB and DL and this year, more than any other, there are players there that teams covet, including a couple of guys who can flat out harrass QBs.

It is providence we might be thanking.

I do not even understand that thinking.

Arizona needs a CB, and Peterson is probably going to be better than DRC.

But...they would be willing to give up Peterson for Smith...but Peterson is suppossed to be so much better...

The trade in and of itself exposes Dallas' over rating of Peterson VS Smith.

Arizona would be giving the Cowboys a lesson on how to build your team, inside out.

Totally disagree.

I'd rather give our 3rd rounder and see this scenario:

1st round: CB Patrick Peterson

TRADE DOWN in the 2nd round to the late 2nd, and get a 3rd rounder back

2nd round: Best available OL (Marcus Gilbert, Ben Ijalana, Danny Watkins, etc)

3rd round: DE/DT Kenrick Ellis

4th round: G/C John Moffitt

Tyron Smith makes Dallas a better football team, not Peterson.

Man, your a good poster and I like hearing what you think... but how can you say that Peterson won't improve the football team?

I've never seen anyone as focused in on one player as you are Smith. I like Smith as a prospect and think he'd be a good pick for Dallas... but man, you are making him the second coming of Anthony Munoz and over valuing (IMO) him by a lot.

Every post you make is only about how much we need Smith and how little anyone else can do to help.

Like I said, I like you as a poster, but man are you going to be crushed if we don't land Smith.

Wow, those are a couple of interesting comments. Are you saying that the Cowboys had Suh rated higher as a prospect than Aikman? That would be a big surprise to me. As I recall, Suh wasn't even the highest ranked prospect on their board last year (I think that was Bradford). While I'm not sure about the Cowboys actual rating of Aikman, it seemed the general consensus at the time was that he was the highest QB prospect since Elway. So it seems Aikman would have been ranked much higher than Suh. Perhaps I'm not understanding your comments here.
