ARLINGTON, Texas - Receiver Roy Williams walked off the field with two trainers after sustaining a blow to his left shoulder near the end of Thursday's no-pads, no-contact public practice at Cowboys Stadium.
On a slant route at the goal line Williams took a hit from cornerback Orlando Scandrick, the play almost a perfect reproduction of a similar collision between the two at training camp in San Antonio when Scandrick knocked off Williams' helmet.
Both Williams and Scandrick were wearing shoulder pads then, though. After practice concluded with another series of 11-on-11 drills, Scandrick was the subject of questioning from his teammates as the team exited the field.
"I didn't hit him with my shoulder or nothing," Scandrick said to receiver Patrick Crayton. "All I did was play the ball."
Following the collision Williams lay on the ground for a moment before being attended to by head trainer Jim Maurer and associate trainer Britt Brown, who escorted him to the locker room, the five-year veteran demonstrating his frustration by swinging his other arm.
Williams will likely undergo an MRI and X-ray.
"We don't know anything about Roy, so let's don't speculate," Wade Phillips said immediately after practice.
"They just bumped . . . I don't know that he's injured. We'll see what happens. I'll just wait to see."
Considering the Cowboys' general caution with injuries so far this preseason it seems unlikely Williams will participate in Saturday's third preseason game against San Francisco. He missed one practice during training camp in San Antonio to have tests on a sore wrist.
Cornerbacks Terence Newman and Mike Jenkins missed more than a week of practice at the Alamodome with groin and ankle injuries, respectively, but the Cowboys' star players have avoided the injury bug during the preseason.
There are a few question marks for Saturday's game though, including receiver Sam Hurd, who has sat the last few days to nurse his sore quad and didn't practice Thursday. Phillips said the team's medical staff was trying to get him back to 100 percent.
"We're being cautious, but I think he's getting well," Phillips said. "I think he's almost well. If he's well, he'll play."
Phillips said rookie linebacker Stephen Hodge was the only player he might rule out. Defensive end Marcus Spears practiced Wednesday morning after missing a day because of a quad injury, while tight end Martellus Bennett (virus) and linebacker Bobby Carpenter (poison ivy) returned to the field Thursday night.
The Cowboys have a number of players with more long-term injuries who they already knew would miss Saturday's game. Quarterback Stephen McGee and fullback Deon Anderson will miss the remainder of the preseason with knee injuries. First-year defensive end Marcus Dixon has been out more than a week after sustaining a groin injury at training camp.
Rookies Brandon Williams (torn ACL) and Robert Brewster (torn pectoral) are likely out for the season. The Cowboys on Thursday released third-year linebacker Justin Rogers after his case of knee tendinitis crept up again.
