A old friend of mine on the Jaguars' coaching squad told me tonight that LaVar Arrington is flying in to Jacksonville sometime this week to engage in contract talks with the team. He said that HC Jack Del Rio, who is a former Pro-Bowl linebacker with the Vikings, is enamored with Arrington.
I can't say I have any love the man that fired me from the organization, but I do think that JDR has the right idea in going after Arrington. The Jaguars are in severe need of a good OLB, and with a top-10 defense that includes players like Mike Peterson at MLB, Big John Henderson and Marcus Stroud as lineman, Reggie Hayward, Rashean Mathis, and Donovin Darius - you can see why a player with Arrington's potential (I said potential) could push the Jaguars over the top.
As a scout, I was lucky to get the opportunity to see Arrington play in the Alamo Bowl back in 1999. I remember turning to Rick Davis, the head college scout for the Jags, and saying that this was the next LT we had been looking for for all of this time. LaVar hasn't really lived up to those expectations, but he has had a fairly productive career with the Skins, despite spending time under the tutelage of more than a few defensive coordinators and LB coaches.
What are you thoughts, as fans, about LaVar coming to Jacksonville? Most of you know much more about Arrington as a player than I do, having watched him grow from a rookie to a six-year veteran with the Commanders. What do you think about his potential with this current Jaguars squad?
Thanks for your input.
