As long as he's a decent backup, who cares? It's not like we need a starter right now.

I'm still on the Simms to Dallas bandwagon, but I agree, there's nothing wrong with a backup who's pushing 30... we expect Romo to be around for at least the next 5-6 years, and a good backup might be able to stick around for that long too...

I'm a little bothered by the arm strength issue, I think this offense requires that you take some shots downfield to keep the defenses from cheating up, but his arm's not a noodle, he just doesn't have a cannon...

He would never make it to us on waivers.

If we want this player, we will have to deal for him.

I was thinking along those same lines... I'd even give up a 6th for him, if the Chargers are looking at him...

We could use a young QB here. We got stuck in that same rut before and kept thinking we could just manufacture options.

We had Wade Wilson around collecting dust for years and before we knew it, Aikman was gone and we were playing idiotic games with the QB position.

It is not something to be taken lightly, even when you get to the third level.
I agree with every word. Besides if he develops and can be traded to another team to be a starter for them that's another potential benefit. I never want to be scraping the bottom of the barrel at QB ever again, and that includes if our starter needs a game off. Steve Beuerlein and other quality backups are evidence of worth when your starter gets dinged.

I agree...How long did Danny White backup Staubach and how long did Steve Young backup Montana? And for that matter; how long was Romo a backup before he was ready to start? We need to start grooming a replacement for Romo soon...ala Aaron Rogers behind Favre (I know the jury is still out on that one but you get my drift).

Romo doesn't have a canon either though.

Both are accurate and both are smart. I'll take that. I'd give up a pick to secure a quality future backup for Tony. Why not? I'd draft one.

If the Dolphins get rid of him I think it is a mistake. I like him better than Henne, and I like Henne.

What's it going to be then, eh?

I look back to our last glory era for advice.

Aikman was concussed. We turned to Kosar. That was a brilliant signing. We also had Garrett in tow.

I want to be that prepared again.

I envy what San Diego has.

Rivers goes down in a divisional playoff game? No problem. Volek was there. And they had a promising young player in Charlie Whitehurst.

What do we have? Brad Johnson? And?

And?

And?

If you answer Richard Bartel, you get a boot to the head.

I don't think Johnson is a terrible backup option really. Obviously, we're screwed if we have to rely on him for 7 games (would Volek be any better?) but I like him as a two-to-three game stopgap. He's intelligent, knows his limitations and I think can play that backup role well.

I think what we're desperately missing is a legitimate 3rd QB prospect that can carry the torch for Johnson in the coming seasons. Kinda like how Garrett started out. That's why I like the Beck idea. Get him in here this season, let him learn the ropes, and then see if as a third-year veteran he can back up Romo. You'd assume he has the tools, and we certainly have the weapons here to aid a young QB.

I just like this type of lineage at the QB position -- Pro Bowl starter, veteran backup, developmental third guy (but like you said --- an actual player that can be developed. Not sure Bartel is any better than Mike Quinn of moons ago).

Is there a guy currently available (or that was available and we passed on) that compares to Kosar?

san diego must not really like whitehurst that much because mosley said they are the other team interested.

of course that could just be miamis people putting that in his mouth.

Well, I'll be honest with you, I could really use a good boot to the head, but I'd rather see Simms or Beck...

In truth, I think Brad Johnson does. A smart, wily veteran who can calm a team if the leader goes down. What we don't have is the future option like Alexander was talking about with Charlie Whitehurst.

Enter John Beck...personally, I like that. If Beck can develop then it benefits the team in so many possible ways.

I like what Green Bay used to do at QB where they always had a stable of developing QBs behind Favre. Hasselback, Brunnell, and Brooks for example. When they reached max worth as backups they were traded and it benefited Green Bay in another way.

I think the Cowboys are probably looking at Simms and Beck as well. I like the approach and it means the brain trust thinks we have real shot at going all the way. We'll see.

There 's a man that knows what he's talking about.....When you are dealing with the most important position on the football team keep your rear end covered.

But "They" didn't draft him. The previous regime did.

I figured they would as soon as Parcells was on board there.

No there isn't. Simms, Beck, and company would not provide the stability that Kosar would.

Also, however, I think people remember the Kosar thing with rose colored glasses. He wasn't horrible, by any means, but he was the guy starting when we lost back to back games against Atlanta and Miami during that stretch so it's not like he came in and went undefeated as the starter. I believe he went 2-2 as the starter which is pretty much what you'd hope for from a backup and I believe Johnson would give us that ability to at least go 2-2 in a 4 game stretch.

Simms or Beck? I doubt it, though I understand that most are only looking for Beck here as a 3rd QB anyway.
