Newman Close to New Deal?

Terence Newman (AP Images) By Adam Caplan
Senior NFL Reporter
Posted May 16, 2008

Dallas Cowboys CB Terence Newman currently has one year remaining on his contract (the final year was voided) and there had been reports of both sides being far apart on negotiations on a new deal.

Contrary to those reports, a league source with knowledge of the negotiations told Scout.com that both sides have made solid progress of late and a deal could be struck soon.

The 29-year old (he turns 30 in September) former Kansas St. University defensive back is scheduled to make $1.416 million in 2008. It's believed the final season of Newman's seven-year rookie deal, which he signed in 2003, was voided due to him meeting certain playing time levels (generally playing a certain number of the defensive snaps in one or a few seasons). His base salary for 2009 was $1.69 million.

Dallas spent one of their two first-round pick in April's draft on CB Mike Jenkins. Should Newman get signed to a new deal as expected, veteran CB Anthony Henry could be moved to safety in future seasons once the coaches feel Jenkins is ready to start or he could be moved to a nickel role. The belief is Jenkins will handle the nickel role this season.

Why is Caplan's name familiar... Is he on Sirius NFL radio?

Oh wait, isn't he that footballinjuries.com (or whatever it is) guy?

This needs to get done if true. I would love Newman to retire w/ the Cowboys. That young man has been fantastic for this club since we drafted him out of KS.

Make it so JJ.

Interesting. Good news, if true.

We have a list of FAs next year (Barber, Canty, Owens, Newman, Hamlin, Colombo)

Should be interesting to see which ones we keep. And of course, the more we give extensions, the better it is for us in case we have to use the franchise tag.

The injuries and age are worrisome, but I would agree that Newman should be a priority over Barber, Canty and Hamlin.

Ware is the one player I absolutely can't stomach the idea of losing.

Isn't that what we all wished for when Roy Williams' contract was up? :laugh2:

I really hope this report is true and accurate. I'd love to have him resigned. He's said that he wants to be paid as a top corner, because he feels he is. So, I'm curious to see the numbers.

I'll predict like I did from the start that it will be a big deal, like all the best corners get, but not the biggest or out of line... Probably about what Trufant got.

I don't have to beg Jerry to pony up whatever it takes to keep Newman - he'll be happy to sign that check. Newman is one of our core players, has no character issues, and his Pro Bowl-quality play has finally brought him some of the recognition he deserves. I look forward to QBs testing Newman more this year as the competition on the other side increases... :)

I haven't regretted that the way some have. I don't agree with the majority.

Not to make this into a Roy thread, but we're just fortunate we signed him before the cap expanded. One year later and we'd be on the hook for a TON more than we are.

I just met and talked to Newman like 10 minutes ago. He's at a signing convention here. I was talking about his Selina highschool team and signing up and playing him one on one.

BTW, it's funny, there were these two women in line asking about him. Asking if he is a Cowboy and what position he played. Then asked if he was any good, then I overheard this other guy telling them if he was good, he would be the QB of the team.
