I don't see how Dallas keeps everyone after this coming year. Too many good players are going to need to be paid, and the money just isn't there to go around.

My guess is that Columbo walks, and either Hamlin or Canty gets away.

Lets just not speak of such things. If that ever happened a deafening cry would hit cowboy nation at once and in unison. There would be gnashing of teeth and sorrow this fan base has never seen...so lets just not speak of such things please :(

Why is Caplan's name familiar... Is he on Sirius NFL radio?

Anyone want to speculate on the deal he ultimately signs?

I say they rip up 2008 and sign a new 6 yr deal that runs from 2008-2013 when Newman hits 35. 48 mil 12 mil sb

He's not going to make less than Trufant. For comparison purposes...

KIRKLAND, Wash. -- Come on down to Marcus Trufant's wedding on Saturday. He'll be able to foot the bill.

The Pro Bowl cornerback and his hometown Seattle Seahawks agreed Wednesday to a $50.2 million, six-year contract that runs through 2013.

Marcus Trufant, CB
Seattle Seahawks
2007 Statistics
Gms/GS: 16/16
Tckls: 85
Ints: 8
PDef: 15
Agent Doug Hendrickson said the deal for the 11th overall draft choice out of Washington State in 2003 includes $20 million in guarantees. A $3 million roster bonus due in 2010 effectively means Trufant is due $28 million over the first three years of the contract, making him one of the highest-paid cornerbacks in the league.

"This is a great wedding present," his fiancee, Jessica Rankin, said with a grin as large as Trufant's timely windfall while standing inside Seahawks headquarters.

"Yeah, it's a good week for Marcus," Hendrickson said in a telephone interview Wednesday morning.

Last year, Nate Clements signed an $80 million, eight-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers. Last week, the Oakland Raiders traded with Atlanta for DeAngelo Hall and then gave Hall a $70 million, seven-year deal.

BTW, it's funny, there were these two women in line asking about him. Asking if he is a Cowboy and what position he played. Then asked if he was any good, then I overheard this other guy telling them if he was good, he would be the QB of the team.

If not next year, or sooner, Ware will probably wind up being the highest paid defensive player in the NFL... wouldn't surprise me.

Okay, I will throw some gas on the fire...

I don't like the amount of money Dallas is putting into old players with relatively longer term deals. Any player over 30 should not be signed to anything longer than 3 years, and they should not be signed to top money.

We already did this with the left OT which I believe was a mistake. I would like TNew for 2 or 3 more years if the price is right. We also have a potential age issue with our offensive line (all 31 or older this year). Time for Dallas to suck it up and let the old vets go and coach up the young guys for future success.

Keeping all the old guys is what we did in the late 90's and we never did see glory again. Too old and too much money tied up = failure.

Actually O-linemen are often in their prime at 31. It's a different kinda position.

As far as Newman, signing him would be one of the best moves of this off-season, maybe the best.

I hear you. You have to be careful inking players to long term deals. Especially 30+ guys.

With that said you have to realize that OL and DB as units tend to age well. Safeties don't last as long because they are asked to hit/tackle more. But CB's can last a loooong time. Especially when they're good.

Newman will turn 30 this Sept, but he's only played 5 seasons. Most players entering their 6th season are turning 26 or 27.
More to the point, most players turning 30 this year are entering their 9th or 10th season.

So how do you evaluate Newman? How do you view him? Of course you cant expect the same longevity as a 26 yr old with 5 seasons played. At the same time I do think you can expect more out of him than a 30 yr old with 10 seasons played.

From my experience, probowl level CB's tend to continue peak performance up to the age range 32-34 and seasons played 11-13.

So I think its safe to sign our 29 yr old probowl CB entering his 6th season to a 6 yr deal.

Jerry has got to learn when and where to spend his money. When FA started he immediately extended all his ageing players and saw them not play our their contracts and this put us in cap and draft hell.

Then he had not talent so periodically he'd try to sign some other teams leftovers and again had some bad luck.

Finally he learned last offseason to try and strike deals with younger FAs who can be impact players.

Now that he has a team with 13 Pro Bowlers he has got to learn that he can't re-sign everyone and that he should learn to trade some of his spare parts for future draft picks to re-stock the team.

I'm afraid he hasn't learned his lessons and will max out the credit cards again and be stuck with a bunch of injured vets who can't play out their contracts.

If things fall like I think they will, they should re-sign Ware and Canty and let TNew, Hamlin, Barber, Columbo find employment elsewhere.

We should be able to afford more than just two of those, though... Especially if Canty doesn't cost a fortune, which I don't think he should.

I would add Hamlin to that list, he is still young, and it's likey Roy will be let go next year.

I see only Romo and Ware as absolutes for this team. I too would hope that Jerry learns not to spend big money to older players, for what they have done in the past. No way would I sign Newman to a big time contract.

Jerry should re-sign only young players and be drafting replacements for the older veterans. I think he did that in this past draft, by selecting Jenkins, Scandrick and trading for Pacman, to minimize TNew's departure if it comes to that.

Next draft should be dedicated to WRs, OL and ILB.
