We should be able to afford more than just two of those, though... Especially if Canty doesn't cost a fortune, which I don't think he should.

It really depends on getting some ballpark numbers for Ware, first. I would not think of doing Hamlin, TNew or Barber until we knew we had Ware locked up.

Of those 3 I'd probably take Hamlin at $6M/yr.

I'm scared of TNew because of age and injuries last year. I don't like the sounds of a 5-year deal for someone his age. If the two rookies workout out and Pacman plays back to form this may be an area of depth on the team that allows us to go a bit cheap. I also firmly believe shutdown CBs are not big difference makers in this league anymore.

For Barber, I don't think he is an elite back and you don't sign non-elite backs to big contracts. They are just too easy to replace in the draft. We might even have two backs who put up his numbers already on the roster. Barber tantalizes with his brutality but he is also about as slow as molasses hitting the hole.

I love rookie contracts

counting less than 2 mil against the cap, not no more, he's going to average like 5 against he cap now

I just met and talked to Newman like 10 minutes ago. He's at a signing convention here. I was talking about his Selina highschool team and signing up and playing him one on one.
FYI, it's spelled Salina.

Not necessarily in the first year. Trufants was only 2.8 hit against this years cap. (Flozell's is 3.6 in 2008 and 2009)

This needs to get done if true. I would love Newman to retire w/ the Cowboys. That young man has been fantastic for this club since we drafted him out of KS.

Make it so JJ.

agree 100%...not only is he a truly great player, but he's a great team guy and despite being great, is definitely one of the more underrated guys in the league...nobody can cover better than he can, he's a solid tackler, never gives up big plays and plays hurt when he has to

Oh please make this happen. I so do not want to lose this kid.

You've been on record saying that you want Newman to remain a Cowboy, but at the same time, realize the business side of the NFL, and made mention that you could see T-New leaving via free agency.

I too am one that feels the Cowboys are so much better off with Newman, than without. This rumor, and the Tony Romo dumping Jessica rumor, hopefully have legs.

Barber - Don't see it happening if he doesn't come down on his price and if Choice and Jones work out well.
Canty - Will most likely get done befor camp.
Owens - will retire a Cowboy.
Newman - Will get done VERY soon.
Hamlin - Will get done before or durring camp.
Colombo - unsure....

I think all but Barber and Colombo will be signed. Jerry will prolly wait it out on Barber to find out what he has in Choice and Jones.

We also have a potential age issue with our offensive line (all 31 or older this year).

WTH?? Only one of our linemen will be 31 or over at any point this year

When I saw the price for the top CBs I thought there was no way he'd be back. If the Front Office is making this happen I will be thrilled. We're hopefully covered either way. But I would much rather keep him than lose him.

Newman has NOT had problems with injuries. The one last year is not one that is debilitating or should become such. So the injury part is only for the ignorant and stupid.
Age. Newman is a fiend for staying in shape; and he has the body type that is a lot like Darrel Green- remember how long he was a top CB?
There is no reason at all that he should not be as effective at 33-34 as he is right now. After that its very chancy.
So frankly a 5 year deal, 6 at the outside, makes the most sense for the boys. Whatever is easiest on the cap.

As far as I am concerned there is not a CB in the NFL that is better. If there is any way we can keep him we should.

Yea, this talk of letting him walk is just dumb. He would last about 5 min on the open market, there is not one team in the NFL that would pass on him if given the chance.

And I have to disagree that CBs are no that important any more. Just look at the money being paid to CBs and how many CBs went in the early rounds of the draft. In a pass-happy league, CBs are at a premium. If you are stuck with a Reeves or Nate Jones covering another team's #3 WR, you are screwed!!!

Pay the man his money Jerry.:D

I wouldn't worry about our resigning Ware cause I think Stephen & Jerry Jones fully realize how important Ware is -- Rome is 1A on offense & Ware is 1A on defense -- everybody else waits on them.

Resigning Newman to a contract that's relatively cap friendly would be great cause we keep one of the top CBs & provide stablility in our secondary. I'd hold off resigning Hamlin until at least middle of the season. I want to see if he continues to play at a high level but I also want to see how well Roy Williams is playing. How much we can afford to give Hamlin will depend on whether Roy is around in 09.

Also think we must resign Canty; he's really coming on as our best DE. Don't know what to think about Spears. At some points, he looked like he was stepping it up but not as much as Canty.

I like Colombo and love his nasty attitude. If we have the cap room, I'd love to keep him but can we afford to pay him like a starting RT is worth. I doubt we can do it and it's time that one of our younger OTs starts in 09 so get them ready to do so. I think resigning of Flozel Adams was necessary. We got ourselves into a bad pickle cause Parcells drafting of 2nd rounder OT out of California was a disaster which we didn't address until 07 season with Free & Marten (a likely RT starter or maybe an OG). Besides Flozel's contract is very cap friendly for first 2 years which gives Free or McQuistan more then enough time.

TO is a major resigning need. He's only 1 of 2 elite WRs in the NFL and players like him don't come this way often. I'd give him Randy Moss contract (3 years for $27M or $29M) but nothing like Raiders gave Jevon Walker.

Much as I love MBIII, I want to see him show in 08 that he really is our #1 RB cause I just don't believe he can carry the ball every game like Johnson (KC) or LT and a few others are expected to do. Besides isn't Johnson already getting injuries?
