Which is exactly why you take talent in the draft and fill in the gaps in FA.

Zeke Elliott is a special player. Not many of those in the league. Take him regardless of need.

Also, you don't over pay in free agency for marginal talent. Wants and needs have to line up with availability and a reasonable cap charge.

Actually, I don't think you can call the Cowboy's attempts to acquire defensive end talent half assed. It is probably second only to the offensive line in the past couple of years in terms of resources spent on the position. We spend a 2nd and 3rd round pick to get Lawrence and a 2nd to get Gregory in back to back drafts. We also spent a 4th on Tapper, robbed a restricted free agent off of another team (Mayowa) and even spent large free agent dollars on Hardy in an attempt to solidify the position.

That is significant resources. It may not be working out outstanding so far, but the jury is still out on every move made except Hardy. It may be fine in time.

Incidentally, a top flight 4-3 defensive end is one of the hardest things to acquire in football. We had a problem doing it when we ran the 4-3 years ago which is why we went to a 3-4 in the first place. Greg Ellis, Ebeneezer Ekuban, Shante Carver, et. al. were all attempts to fill the black hole at the defensive end position. None of them were outstanding and some (Carver) weren't even adequate.

Lawrence may be better than all of the guys I just listed. Tapper has potential, but has just been hurt. The problem with you guys is you want a pro bowler or all pro at every position, and that just isn't reality.

4-3 DEs are difficult to find alright. Jones has never drafted a pro bowl talent at 4-3 DE, unless you consider Ware a 4-3 DE (career lows as pass rusher playing that spot and no pro bowl nods). Ellis didn't get his lone pro bowl until he became a 3-4 OLB. And even Jimmy with his reputation for finding and developing players only drafted a couple of pro bowl DEs in his less than a decade in the league. Tolbert had one pro bowl I believe and Jason Taylor is more than likely a HOFer.

And a pro bowler at every position is unrealistic, but Marinelli needs pro bowl level talent at specific positions to make his D work. Those specific positions are 3 tech and RDE.

I think concerns about the defensive end position are reasonable, and in fact justified. But obviously it may turn out that we are OK at the position in the same way that we appear to be ok at QB.

I hope so, but I think I have less faith in that happening than others do. I'm not seeing it in the preseason games, and the candidates people have pointed to have either not shown up or disappeared entirely.

Which according the rest of his career is an anomaly

Statistically, one year out of 4 total years is a data point, not an anomaly.

Don't know why people insist on future telling. I just said that is worth nothing he had his best statically year befor Suh got there. Nothing more than that.

By my calculations it is more likely he does the same thing he has done for 3 years than that which he only did for 1 year.
