They didn't totally miss. Why some don't get that I'll never understand.

Where are the "hits"? I'm open to hearing about them to change my mind. The closest I can think of to one over those "past 3 years" is Lawrence, and he's suspended for a quarter of the season.

Vernon's contract is more than I'd be willing to pay, but the only people that doubt his pass rushing skills are people who only heard of the guy when he signed his contract.

He's a good pass rusher, and you can say that was a result of Suh and Wake if you want, but he had 11.5 sacks in 2013 - before Suh showed up.

Which according the rest of his career is an anomaly

I get it. Some of you think I am a disgruntled butt head because I beat the dead horse on the defensive end spot. So my apologies to those who have to read my tripe. LOL.

I am just frustrated at such a half assed approach to fixing a problem that the front office admitted was a problem last year. And when given a few vet options to sure it up a bit, the front office acted like everything was fine, when, IMO, it's not.

Actually, I don't think you can call the Cowboy's attempts to acquire defensive end talent half assed. It is probably second only to the offensive line in the past couple of years in terms of resources spent on the position. We spend a 2nd and 3rd round pick to get Lawrence and a 2nd to get Gregory in back to back drafts. We also spent a 4th on Tapper, robbed a restricted free agent off of another team (Mayowa) and even spent large free agent dollars on Hardy in an attempt to solidify the position.

That is significant resources. It may not be working out outstanding so far, but the jury is still out on every move made except Hardy. It may be fine in time.

Incidentally, a top flight 4-3 defensive end is one of the hardest things to acquire in football. We had a problem doing it when we ran the 4-3 years ago which is why we went to a 3-4 in the first place. Greg Ellis, Ebeneezer Ekuban, Shante Carver, et. al. were all attempts to fill the black hole at the defensive end position. None of them were outstanding and some (Carver) weren't even adequate.

Lawrence may be better than all of the guys I just listed. Tapper has potential, but has just been hurt. The problem with you guys is you want a pro bowler or all pro at every position, and that just isn't reality.

Those of you *****ing about the lack of talent would go totally ape **** if we signed a defensive end that cost us enough to make resigning Martin (OG) to a second contract. You can't have it both ways. Every team has holes somewhere. Maybe out perceived hole won't be bad enough to get in the way. Regardless the salary cap requires planning and a little luck go your way with getting superior cheap talent in the draft, and lack of injuries.

You improve a lot more by getting a player like Romo or Dak (assuming he turns out to be the real deal) where you found them than by giving up an overall #1 for the same player, even though they are well worth the #1 pick.

It hasn't been unless you want the big splahy name FA signing which we haven't done (thank goodness) in years.

The problem is that every fan wants everything for nothing. You can't pay everyone what they want because of the cap. There arent enough great players to go around. So you make the most of what you have and trudge onward. Our arrow is pointing up, I don't care what some of the people on this board say.

Yes Gregory has been a failure, but his issues aren't very different than what Tyron Mathieu had before his draft. And he has turned out to be a star. The Patriots took a risk on an injury prone DT Easley in the first round a couple of years ago, now he's not even on their team. Every team takes risks, and every team has weaknesses on their team because not all of their risks/draft choices worked out. You can't point to every team's personel failures as a proof of a lack of planning.

I wish I could like this post twice.

Cardinals only signed Freeney last year because they lost a guy to injury. They didn't need him because everyone was back healthy this year. They also added Chandler Jones. We, unfortunately, don't have the good fortune of having he same type of edge players the Cards have.

And again, the Ayers contract is a total false argument (people make the same one about Mario Williams). So if Gregory and Lawrence are the DEs of the future and prove it this year, if you had signed Ayers for a similar contract he got in Tampa, you could have cut him this year for NO CAP DAMAGE. He carries no dead money after this season. Mario Williams also carries a minimal dead money hit of $2MM in 2017 if you cut him. So......... in both cases, Ayers and Williams were perfect short term vet answers at DE when you had only ONE proven defensive end coming back this season.

Also, the Cardinals don't have our offense, which reinforces my point that you can't have everything. Your best bet is to get a player in a late round to step up, or get a journeyman who is a late bloomer to bloom when they come to your team. Say hello to Tapper and Mayowa as potential players to fit the previously mentioned criteria.

Which is exactly why you take talent in the draft and fill in the gaps in FA.

Zeke Elliott is a special player. Not many of those in the league. Take him regardless of need.

Speaking for myself, I'm not using the term "colossal failure", that looks like hyperbole and exaggeration in an effort to make an argument that's not there.

I have concerns. Concerns going in, and concerns now that a good number of these candidates to step up have instead stepped out.

Mayowa hasn't played yet. Tyrone Crawford can't stay on the field for a week. McClain has missed time. This is our first look at Maliek Collins, and Irving is out with a groin injury with no return date yet. Oh yeah, and Charles Tapper isn't on the field and there aren't any reports on if or when he'll be back. And now there's talk of a knee injury for 'Bronco'.

Given this list, is anyone wrong to be concerned about a position that was already questionable going into the season? Is that out of bounds?

I think concerns about the defensive end position are reasonable, and in fact justified. But obviously it may turn out that we are OK at the position in the same way that we appear to be ok at QB.

Having concerns are more than fair, DE is the most questionable position on the team, especially when Lawrenece isn't available. I just think people are ignoring the upside of the pass rush when they are questioning it. Also lets not freak out over training camp injuries. The only ones that seem like a regular season issue is the vague seriousness surrounding Jenkins, and the lack of reps for Tapper.

Actually, we might actually be worse off at safety and at linebacker. We are super thin at linebacker.

Yes, drafting best player available leads to better overall talent acquisition than drafting based on need. That is one thing we are definitely on the same page about.
