Javonte Williams turned out to be an excellent fa pickup. 1,200 yard back on a minimum contract. Clearly earned his extension. Good all around, power back.

After Williams there are questions:

-Blue was a healthy scratch for most of the season. Nobody fully knows why he couldn't make the active roster. In the season finale against the Giants, we saw his potential where he speed and explosiveness showed up. Has the Felix Jones/Tony Pollard skill set.

-Mailik Davis is the Rico Dowdle out of the group. Solid all around back that doesn't have any elite traits.

-Mafah-more similar to Williams as he is more of a power back that will get those dirty yards. Missed most of the season due to injury. He would be an ideal backup for Williams if he missed a significant amount of time.

Would make a ton of sense to add a low cost veteran to compete with Blue/Davis as the #2 back. Think Mafah is a PS candidate.

I thought Malik Davis did a fine job when called upon. He’d be my #2 at this time.

Maybe Blue can beat him out during the offseason, but he’s my backup as of now.
When Williams was out late in the season, Davis just wasn't good enough to be the lead guy, as the #2 he was fine. Think they have to find that backup for Williams, maybe that is Mafah.

That's one of the fun positions to watch it's up for grabs right now if we had a game tomorrow I'd say Davis, But given the fact that Mafa hasn't had a shot yet I think he's gonna be a bigger surprise and people think he runs a lot like Williams So it'll be interesting to see how they do the depth chart and the weekly activations so I don't think number two will be the same every week... Part of the game plans are which players you're bringing for depth and for packages that you use against certain teams defenses..

But yes I'm interested to see how this battle works out but Davis finally is getting his shot just like Rico right on time and I believe he'll be the one that's the tweener he can play a little bit between the tackles he's got a little wiggle in speed He runs a lot like Pollard..

So there's your answer and most people are saying the same thing...

The way let me fill you in on a secret they stashed Mafah, he could have played after four games, I guarantee he was healthy enough to come back but they needed to call UPS, you only get a limited amount from your IR, and he was the odd man out, because they didn't need him bad enough they stashed him all year He was not that injured.. Just like Blue came back from his injury easily so could have Phil they just didn't that he's going to be more than 100 percent and ready to go camp..

I like it there won't be any snap counts at a big time battle for that spot they don't count out the kid from Tulsa.. He also looks like a big physical back that has enough speed that he can definitely be an RB2..

I think it's a given That's the fun part of camp there's some positions that are going to be all out in preseason fighting and battling and it's going to make the preseason games more interesting...

That was last year He will arrive he can probably be a starter as long as it's not for the season but you could say that about most anybody Backups they're not gonna be the same. I believe he could take all the major carries if needed You just wouldn't bang him up inside more you would use Hunter for those short yardage situations or obviously you were just on first and 10 you wanted to run the ball it would go to Hunter in that situation if now if it's long term like out for the season yes they're gonna have to use the guy from Tulsa Mafa or they pick up Chubb off the free agent pile which there might be others but right now that's who I would take if it was today..

It's the upside vs floor with Blue/Davis.

Yeah see that's the thing if if Mafah is not available like active that game Williams goes out for the rest of the game hunter takes his spot and then Davis gets More carries than he would have and then you bring in blue for change of pace..

But this can be better answered after we see preseason games where the depth chart will be filled out and we'll know who's going to be actually active more than not..

I was very impressed by the kid from Tulsa I watched his tape he looks like a three down back Maybe not a starter in the NFL but a guy that can fill in and that happens with running backs they don't all need to be some big name star to have success..

If James Conner gets released, I wonder if Adams reunites with him here.

TBD Like I said camp will be fun the two outsiders the guy from Tulsa and that kid I can't pronounce his name, They're going to put pressure on all these guys there is no written in depth chart outside of Williams, they're going to be banging trying to fight for the spots..id say,

it's wide open..

It'll be a fun preseason to watch them because they're not getting to sit like last year Williams will get bubble wrapped, And the rest of those dudes, It's all up for grabs..

I do not believe they will add anybody until after camp so whoever is on that shopping list and they think they need something yes he's an option... But the guy you gotta wonder nick Chubb even though he didn't look his self last year this will be his year two post injury and he may be a surprise he can be anywhere of a shell of himself that's who I'd want but you're right Clayton Adams He might want Connor back..

I prefer to roll with the young guys until you need one of those veterans and somebody's gonna be on that list in an emergency situation that you can just grab get them prepared that week and just throw them right in because that's how it works but remember Hunter can run the football short yardage he's bigger He can do it in spot duty I believe he could be the starter if Williams goes down at least the rest of that game...

I think the issues with Jaydon Blue were all about getting him to do the little things like blocking assignments and I think he showed them the improvement they were looking for. Otherwise they could have drafted Washington, Johnson, Singleton, Allen, or Claiborne with one of those picks in the 4th round. So I think they like their guys.

Javonte Williams turned out to be an excellent fa pickup. 1,200 yard back on a minimum contract. Clearly earned his extension. Good all around, power back.

After Williams there are questions:

-Mafah-more similar to Williams as he is more of a power back that will get those dirty yards. Missed most of the season due to injury. He would be an ideal backup for Williams if he missed a significant amount of time.

Would make a ton of sense to add a low cost veteran to compete with Blue/Davis as the #2 back. Think Mafah is a PS candidate.
Im liking Mahah. Player to watch
He was injured yes but mostly redshirt

RB depth is one of the bigger issues at this time. Will any of them step up to take the #2 lead. Or will it be whatever the game situation is at the time as to who plays. Maybe there is no clear cut #2.

All eyes will be on Blue, once again. Has he matured enough to step up and show improvement. I think it is his job to lose to start in TC. Even though the coaches will not outright say that.
They need packages that will get Blue into open space in the passing game. This is where he can be dangerous to the defense.
-Mailik Davis is the Rico Dowdle out of the group. Solid all around back that doesn't have any elite traits.
Davis is quick and fast to hit the hole up the middle. He has a role on the team. But does not seem to offer much else than a 5 to 8 carries per game player.
-Mafah-more similar to Williams as he is more of a power back that will get those dirty yards. Missed most of the season due to injury. He would be an ideal backup for Williams if he missed a significant amount of time.
Mafah is interesting, he too can take the lead for RB 2. Not sure how he is in the passing game compared to what Blue can do.
It may come down to which player can pass protect better.
Would make a ton of sense to add a low cost veteran to compete with Blue/Davis as the #2 back. Think Mafah is a PS candidate.
They will go into TC, and possibly a few PS games before they look at this option. Unless some RB is released and falls to them.

Do not forget about Luepke's role in all of this.

Hoping Blue has matured some since last year.

Running Backs - who is 2?
Depends on Blue. How much will he have progressed? If not enough, the Cowboys likely stick with Davis. I'm not sure Mafah is an NFL player. He could be. Again, how much has he progressed?

The bottom line is it's far too early to say because we won't get the answers we need for several months.

Nice work lately with some great threads btw…..

I think offense could find its way to another level if Blue can be something remotely close to what he was supposed to be. I’m not going to pretend to know exactly what his issue is/are, but I know it’s not about running with the ball in hand, and it’s perplexing.

blue or mafah.
i like the depth of the rb room.
i would not add a vet unless we have a significant injury to blue, mafah or davis.

When Williams was out late in the season, Davis just wasn't good enough to be the lead guy, as the #2 he was fine.
He had a fine game against Washington in week 17 when he had a good number of snaps. And he averaged 4.8 yds per carry on the season.

Think they have to find that backup for Williams, maybe that is Mafah.
He’s a complete unknown at the NFL level. I’m not rooting against him, bet he’ll need to prove it.
