We know that a strong rushing game does nothing to help us win, according to the many analytical analysts on this site.......but at least we have people that believe it will help our Defense

Church is buying into Jerry Jones’ assertion that the selection of running back Ezekiel Elliott with the fourth overall pick will be a boon to the defense because the offense can get back to the long drives that made things work so well for the Cowboys in 2014.

The better you are at controlling the ball, the fewer possessions your defense has to face.

Unfortunately, it's still up to your defense as to how it performs on each possession. And this decade, we've ranked an average of 23rd in points allowed per drive, while the Super Bowl winner has ranked an average of 4th.

Rushing going to help the defense is Jerry code talk meaning our defense is going to be atrocious this year. I hope not, I'm praying not, I'll bet all my Pokemon i've caught :) hoping our D is decent this year.

Our TOs were way up in 2014 when the D was better rested....hopefully it was more than a coincidence

Church's comment is, indeed, the first time I've heard any player or coach on the Cowboys suggest the Zeke pick was a move to keep the defense off the field. That statement has been made by a lot of fans, certainly the media, and of course Jerry Jones; and now Church.

Regardless, I think the Cowboys picked Elliott because he was a special talent; a guy that can have an Adrian Peterson-type impact on the offense. Dallas already had "good" running backs; Zeke has superstar potential. Guys like him impact the entire team.

Our defense played on average one snap less per game in 14 than they did last year

It wasn't a coincidence. Those takeaways (the result of having big leads over already turnover-prone opponents) got the D off the field faster.

The offense didn't give the defense any more rest in 2014 than it did in 2015.

One of these days, this tidbit is going to sink in. I can feel it.

But they somehow managed to score 200 more points while the D gave up 22 pts less

Maybe this time people will.... Nevermind.

Time of possession and "rest" are two different things. The defense being on the field for ten minutes in the fourth quarter when your team is up 14 points is different than being on the field ten minutes in the first quarter down by 7.

The time of possession is the same in both cases, the game and the defense "resting" are not.

After watching EE on ESPN special. Every team he's gone to has immediately made the playoffs. Or something of that nature. He went to some no name Catholic school and won a title. Then Ohio state. We all know how that worked out. Kid is a stud. And with the line here and Romo and Dez and the Witten factor. I'm not sure the defense will know who to cover. Especially with zekes pass catching ability.

You also get even more rest after a TD compared to a punt or turnover......a replay delay, then a TV timeout after the score and and another TV timeout after the KO...DAL scored a lot more TDs in 2014 when they ran it 100 times more and threw it 50 times less...

Say whatever you want but DAL scored its second most points ever with that 52-48% run to pass ratio in 2014

Marinelli said it. That's like the horses mouth.

But I agreed with the rest of what you said. Zeke fits this offense unbelievably well.

Jerry said it right after the Draft as well

Yes, a strong running game should, and most oft the he time will, make your passing game better. That will put pressure on opposing offenses to keep up on the scoreboard. It leads to opponents taking more risks, which will increase turnovers. It will extend poss Asians, and take time off the clock, which will limit the number of possessions the opposition will get. So yes, a strong running game will aid the defense - AS LONG AS THE PASSING GAME IS EFECTIVE. If you don't pass well, the quality of your running game won't make a difference.

That's what those "analytical" types are saying on this site. Not that the running game doesn't help the team win

How many ppg did our offense average in 2014? Sure, our defense was better rested, and the running game was one reason why. BUT, the biggest reason for the large number of TOs in 2014 was because opposing offenses were playing from behind and had to take risks.

Here's hoping Zeke and the rest of the RB corps is able to equal and perhaps even do a bit better than DeMarco Murray did back in 2014.

Hopefully, the quality and quantity of what we have now at the RB position should at least equal what he did back then. Anyhow, we'll see.
