Any sort of system where a small cadre of people control everything and the underlings are chosen based on their obedience as opposed to any other qualifications that lend themselves to good organization and the reduction of corruption yield the mess the Russian military is in.

Defender advantage.

The old military axiom is "The aggressor needs to outnumber the defender by 3:1 in order to achieve success."

Obviously, there are instances when aggressor's had less of numerical advantage (such as the defender's troops being poor quality).

But in an urban setting that ratio becomes even higher.

Russian's moving in column in an area that isn't full of multi-story buildings is your typical suburban area full of housing and one-story structures which are certainly tall enough to high defenders.

It becomes an easy "point & shoot" exercise for the defenders.

The defender's advantage can be overcome to an extent with infantry deployed on both sides of the road looking for possible ambush points.

But the Russian's probably aren't too motivated to leave their amoured personnel carriers in order to try looking around the corners of various building.

I remember reading an article weeks ago by a military strategist about the high number of destroyed tanks etc, and that's exactly what he mentioned, poor support for the armored columns. Poor ground support, air support, single file columns, basically turns them into sitting ducks. That's how the tractor brigades get many of those usable tanks, soldiers panic and bail.

Which makes it even more stunning that the Russians are following this script... It ain't exactly rocket surgery. But it shows you how unmotivated/uninspired the Russian command chain is. The infantry is more than happy to let the tanks take the lead without support and get pounded.

Very similar circumstances to what happened in WWII, especially early part of WWII on the Soviet side. Lots and lots of unsupported armoured assaults without infantry and artillery support, which the German army ate for lunch.

If this is all true ....... its pathetic what has happened to the Russian Military in the last 25 years and now is a chance to end a threat.

But one tactic of ancient war was to make yourself look weak to draw out all your enemies ....... I hope the world is not falling for a rope a dope.

I do not think NATO would join the fray on the side of Ukraine.

They may not need too.

Outside of boots on the ground and aircraft, NATO has been supplying Ukraine, to include intel and probably coaching them through their moves.

IMO, This is yet another proxy war just like Syria. Parts of Africa are probably next on the schedule.

If true just awful for those soldiers. I can not imagine these Russian soldiers on board with this nonsense, at least I sure hope they are not…but who knows. Just a terrible situation all around.

Russian soldiers glowing at night just makes it easier for the Ukrainian snipers.

Seriously though, Would not be surprised after the dust clears if we find out the Russians have made some stupid moves with these nuclear areas they were capturing.

FBI disrupts Russian military hackers, preventing botnet amid Ukraine war

The Federal Bureau of Investigation wrested control of thousands of routers and firewall appliances away from Russian military hackers by hijacking the very same devices Moscow's spies had been using to set up a "botnet" – a network of hacked computers that can bombard other servers with rogue traffic.

"Fortunately, we were able to disrupt this botnet before it could be used," U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland said during a news conference.
