RW: Dallas likely give Peterson a long hard look at # 9, unlikely to fall past 49ers

anyone thinking that a position not RT or FS is an immediate and priority need right now is a idiot. They are so far above any thing else it is not funny. CB is not a NEED at this time. And you can get a good one in the third rd.

We can win with Newman, Jenkins and Scandrick. We cant win with continued awful OL play and no pass rush.

I respectfully disagree. IF Patrick Peterson turns out to be a shutdown corner for us, he automatically makes life easier for both safety positions and the pass rush. If you can shut down a team's #1 WR, everything changes for the Cowboys' defense.

I dont see where he changes anything with the safety play. The fact is the guys we have trotted out there for several seasons are just flat out awful.

If he were Deion Sanders and we could get him at 9, I'd be all for it. I'd even be all for moving up a few spots to get him. But I've seen him play enough that IMO, he's nowhere near Deion Sanders as a cover guy. And with the rules the way they are in favor of offenses and passing games, the pass rush is much more important IMO than who we have at CB.

Well, Spencer is getting one more year whether we agree with it or not. Rob Ryan will get his shot. If PP takes away a team's #1 WR, then it puts less pressure on our safeties to cover the entire field. Peterson Island would be awesome; look what it has done for the Jets. Dallas will sign a veteran safety (Huff), and may draft a mid-round guy like Quinton Carter at SS. We need a veteran presence at FS though.

It's not fair to compare ANY corner to Deion. All PP can do is be PP, and he'll be a dang good player for a long time.

Spencer may or may not be getting another year. He might be here, but it doesnt mean he ends up playing as much. They might have evaluated his play the entire time he's been here and decided he isnt going to "get it"...if so, then OLB is a pressing need and there are several very good one's who fit this scheme who will be available in this draft.

And unlike many in this fickle forum, I havent given up on Mike Jenkins yet. He had a superb 2009 season and numerous people who cover the sport said he was the best young CB in the NFC. He had a down yr last yr for various reasons, it doesnt mean he he is washed up or a goner. Scandrick played substancially better the 2nd half of the season because they changed the way he was used, I would think Ryan is a smrt guy and will do similar things with him. Newman is still a very good player.

I'm sure they'll add a CB or two via the draft, they need to plan for the future some. But I still firmly believe the OL and pass rush are the biggest issues on the team, followed by getting improved safety play.

I suggest you listen to Rob Ryan's press conference where he talked about Spencer.

so what if Carolina takes Dareous - there HC is Riveria a D lineman

Denver will be all ove PP - there coach is Fox D coach
I guarantee you Denver is not taking Peterson over DL.

The only way I could see Denver taking Peterson is if Dareus goes #1 overall to Carolina, but I think CAR is going QB no matter what.

Didnt he glowingly speak of the CB's here too?

I would agree that it makes sense for Cleveland as players that will fit their needs will be there and will come cheaper, but I also believe that we've propped them up as a trade partner without tangible evidence to suggest they are fully on board with it.

For instance, if Fairley is their guy, the Titans could very well snatch him before. Maybe they want Julio and Washington will trade a pick to jump in front of them.

Trust me, love the idea of PP wearing the star, but that's all predicated on the idea that Cleveland would take our pick in a trade scenario or that a better offer isn't on the table.

I think as a fanbase we identified a proper target. Come Thursday night we might be off on the compensation though. Lets say SF offers up #7 and their 3rd? I mean, Peterson isnt a hidden gem or anything.

If SF does make that offer to Cle, and its on the Cowboys to sweeten it, and they cant do it w/ a 2012 pick, I think they may just stay at 9 and take Peterson rather than give up a 1st and 2nd.

Smart drafting for them, for us probably not so much.

CB isnt one of the key issues on this team. OL play and generating more pass rush is. Peterson doesnt really do much for either of those issues.

Im not going to talk up the OL to make my case for PP. Both the secondary and OL are weak as hell and have been killing us for years. My thing is that PP is the best prospect in the draft. And there are plenty of C/G's in the mid-rounds and also a tier 1 tackle could be had somewhere from 27-40.

IMO, David is right when he said that OL and Safety are the biggest priorities on this team. I also think he's correct when he says that Peterson is not Deion.

I couldn't agree more. You could have 3 deions out there and the offenses would just line up in 4-5 WR sets and pick on the other DBs. You can't win. Get insane pressure on the qb and your much, much better off. And don't forget OL. We have a couple of bums we're trotting out there. Let's solidify that before we go for a corner. Ball control and pass rush can dominate the NFL.

If we have to cut Newman I think CB is a bigger need than either.

Peterson is also not Kareem Larrimore, Dwayne Goodrich, or Mario Edwards.

I don't know that we have to cut Newman but if we did, we are still in much better shape at CB then we are at OL or Safety. However, lets say we do have to cut him, can we all agree that QB is the most important position on this team and that Peterson will not help to keep our QB upright?

I am not certain where you are going with the comparison of Larrimore, Goodrich or Edwards but it doesn't really help our case in that CB is not the biggest priority IMO. I assume you are trying to make the point that Peterson may not be Deion but he's not these other players either. That's a true statement but is it relevent? We would never be considering using the 9th pick or even trying to trade our draft away to move up in order to take any of those three players like we apparently are with Peterson. It's a true statement that he is not any of those players but it's not really a point that speaks to this question either. At least, not as I see this.

I just think "he's not Deion" is a cop out.

What he is, is the best CB prospect in years. A difference maker. A rain maker.

I actually edited my earlier post but I will respond to this. I don't believe he is the best CB prospect in years. He is a Safety IMO. However, even if he were the best CB prospect in years, how does that help us protect the most important player on our team? Do you believe that we have any chance of winning a championship if we can not protect Romo?

I don't think Newman is our best option for a cap relief release.

Barber and Williams make much more sense. No I know their deals might not give us relief in 2011, but they certainly will in 2012 and beyond.
Then you rework some other deals of players you know are here longer term to defer some 2011 money into 2012-2014.

OMT Neither Barber or Williams' release would mandate a premium draft pick be spent to find a replacement.
With Newman it would be a given.

Fairley, Bowers, Quinn, Julio Jones all make some sense for them and one or two will be there at 9.

So its smart drafting to get a 3rd rounder pick and change if you will end up w/ one of your targets anyway.

Robert Quinn is a top three pick. He's a 20yr old version of D-WARE. Jeez, this boy's motor, speed, and incredible strength is impressive for such a young guy. He's Ray Lewis-like in appearence but with height at 6'5". His tenacity and ability to either rush the passer or stop the run is the best I've seen in awhile. If anybody drops to Pick#9, it'll be Julio Jones or Prince. I'd rather the Boys pick up the two best OL available with their first two picks and then go NT with their 3rd pick. We also need a big bruising RB in the 245-265lbs range for short yardage (since we constantly find ourselves with 3rd and short on long drives and/or short and goal). We can also pick up some ILB depth from teams cutting 'high price' veterans and then sign the FS named Michael Huff from Oakland. Unfortunately, starting veteran OL and DL are cost prohibitive but can be drafted this year with our high picks in each draft round.
