Mathews suffered a neck injury in the Eagles' Week 16 win over the New York Giants last season. He has yet to participate in any football activities since, but admitted he still plans to play in 2017.

Mathews is owed $5 million this season, the final season of a three-year contract he signed in 2015. He has rushed for 1,200 yards and 14 touchdowns in 26 games with the Eagles.

Last season, Mathews led the Eagles in rushing with 631 yards and a career-high eight touchdowns.

The Eagles will save $4 million in cap space once Mathews is released.

Per the NFLPA, the Eagles had $8.66 million in available cap space before the Mathews release. That number will go up to $12.66 million.

The Eagles have 87 players on their active roster with the release of Mathews

If he is healthy we could bring him in on a one year deal and cut rod smith...

They cut him an hour after he passed his physical. That is how cruel the NFL can be.

Think with our current situation, we may kick the tires? He supposedly has a clean bill of health.

Only if the Zeke suspension is upheld amd not fought in court. If Zeke isnt missing those 6 games there is no point.

If he was going to miss those games, absolutely

He is worse than Morris and Dmac. I have no problem with Morris or DMac - there are just not Elliot - not many are, the only 2 in the NFL right now that could replace Elliot are Bell and Johnson - otherwise it is a waste of time.

If healthy, yes. I like him better then Hillman and he is a better fit for our Offense. I'd think about bringing him in and going with DMC, Morris and Mathews. Carrying Smith at FB or sending him to PS. When Elliott comes back, just cut or trade one of the three. By next year, if you can hold Smith on the PS, he should be ready to make the team. JMO

Addition:

Assuming he's still eligible for the PS.

He is better than Hillman and more versatile than Morris but we need some young blood that can play STs too

Those two are very very over-rated around here........... if Zeke misses games we are in trouble

DMC can bust a big one when it is blocked but so can I
AMorris is one dimensional and loses a step every year

They both only averaged 3.6 YPC last year behind the The Wall

INK ......I would at least bring him and take a look. Mathew has averaged over 4 plus years a carry over the last fours vs DMC just over 3 yards. Maybe it just me but DMC look stiff the last couple games. They both are 29 ....at a min, we have nothing to lose.
