We had to put my old buddy Mac to sleep this morning.

His name on his papers read, "MacKenzie Cowboy", we always called him Mac.

He was 14, .. never saw a Super Bowl win.
We got him a few weeks after we beat the Steelers in XXX.

I know it is only a dog, but it is tough to say good-bye.

Sort of theraputic somehow to share it, thanks for letting me.

Sorry, to hear that. It is never easy to put a good companion down. I have had to do it as well and it hurts.

One thing that I kept in mind was I gave her a good home that she may not otherwise had and in return I got a an unconditional loyalty and friendship from her. Not a bad trade off.

After she passed I waited a little bit but then went out and bought another Golden and will provide her a home and attention that she may not otherwise get and in return I have a very loyal companion and friend

Sorry to hear that. I had to do that a couple of years ago. It's tough and I still miss him. He was in a lot of pain so it was time to let him go. He's no longer in pain.

I know, that's the case here too. No more pain.

What a great looking dog your guy was. I love dogs, all dogs. I have been watching the Westminster dog show the past two nights just just to see all the different kinds.

Sadly, I had to do this once before about 19 yrs ago, so I have been here before.

This is still a tough day though. Doesn't seem real yet, he was with us this morning.

Yeager, did you ever get another dog?

Thanks to you too ethiostar and Doomsday101!

We already had a second dog. A terrier mix and we also took in my nephew's boxer but the boxer didn't last long. My wife was working a night shift at the time. He was used to being awake and running around during the day. He wouldn't let her sleep so he had to go. :(

So we only have the terrier mix right now. We'll eventually get another dog.

Take some time but just remember they need us and if you can give one a home what they give in return is worth it. I never looked at it as trying to replace one with another because frankly each Golden I have owned has had their own personality but the one common was the affection they give in return.

Sorry about ol' Mac WV. He was a handsome guy, and I'm sure he knew he was loved.

I lost my oldest boy, Gus back in May, but I was happy that he went at home, on his favorite pillow, with his buddy Goober at his side.

The two new puppies I got a few months later, are a ton of fun and good companions for ol' Goob, but I'll never replace Gus, and still catch myself looking over at his favorite spot in the den, expecting to see him stretched out, probably sleeping upside down.

Since we've been married(34 1/2 yrs), we've lost 3 other dogs, .. I guess I forgot how much it hurts.

Thanks to everyone who posted here, nice to hear from other dog lovers.

Not everyone is a dog lover like we are. I don't get it, how can you not love dogs?

Those people really miss out on one of God's gifts to us. The companionship between a dog and his family is awesome.

Dallas, ... that Gus was a handsome guy. Was he a long-haired dachsund?

Yup, longhair, just like the two new ones I got.

Goober's a smooth coat, and I've had 1 other smooth, but I think I like the LH's better now. Their personalities are slightly different.

I'm a big time dog lover and I take/get my dogs out of the pound that were on death row and give them a home and it is amazing what a little love can do to turn a dog around. But sadly most of these dogs don't live very long and it always hurts to say goodbye...When I die, I have got to talk to God about extending the life of these guys.

I think that it is great rescuing dogs from the pound.

I would like to do that myself, but my wife is allergic to most dogs, especially those that shed, so we have to know what we are getting.

You say they don't live long, .. I am very grateful to have had Mac 14 wonderful dog years.

My oldest son is 32 and my youngest is 26, .. they were 18 and 12 when we got Mac. Mac was here for some huge years in our life.

Today has been a tough one, .. several, several times I have looked for him to join me in doing what we do. Whether it is sharing a bowl of cereal, helping me take out the trash, shoveling the snow off of the sidewalk. He was good to have around.

Thanks again for all of you posting here.

Chuckle... my mutt Aly likes to do the same thing... I'll walk back into the bedroom, and she'll be sprawled out on my bed, all 4 paws stuck straight up in the air... it looks like she can't possibly be comfortable...

WV, I've been where you are, as a number of us apparently have, so you have my deepest sympathies... the only advice I could offer you is to right out and get another best buddy ASAP... getting to know a new dog is the best possible therapy for your loss, at least it's worked for me twice now... within 5 days of losing one, I had another in the house... I lost Thunder at 16 years old, I went straight down to the pound and found Bear... I lost him 6 years later (he had a run-in with a real bear), and it was back to the pound, where I found Aly... that was 12 years ago...

It has been good to hear from you SilverBear, and others. I hope people keep posting here about their dogs, it has been theraputic for me.

I think we will get another pup someday, but like I was telling TrickBlue, I have to wait until my wife is ready. She was with him all day every day so it is hard for her.

We each deal with grief differently, she needs to get through a certain period before she will be ready to start with a new pup.

We'll see.

He has been a real pain in the butt for the past year or so, but you do what you have to to try and make it comfortable for them. So maybe I need a little break myself.

Thanks again.
