We had to put my old buddy Mac to sleep this morning.

His name on his papers read, "MacKenzie Cowboy", we always called him Mac.

He was 14, .. never saw a Super Bowl win.
We got him a few weeks after we beat the Steelers in XXX.

I know it is only a dog, but it is tough to say good-bye.

Sort of theraputic somehow to share it, thanks for letting me.

they aren't just dogs, they are like our children. Mine is almost 12 and I dread the day he is no longer with us. He was our first born.

It is amazing, .. the bond between dog and man. Dogs are awesome.

It's great that you have had him for 12 years, that is a long time for most dogs.

Rub his ears and kiss his nose for me.

I had a little friend, part dachshund and part silky - originally a birthday present for my daughter - for 17 years and had to care for him like an old invalid for the last two years and when we finally had to put him down, it hurt me far more than I ever thought it would. I had dreams about him for years afterwards and it was good because in my dreams he was always still alive and my constant companion. It was 15 years before I could bring myself to like another dog.

Our new dog is a Maremma, a pure white Italian livestock guardian dog that is similar to a Great Pyrenees (we live on a ranch) and she is amazing. She is three years old now and has been out protecting our flocks from predators and her coat is as pure white as it was as a puppy and there are no burrs in her coat. She always looks like she just got out of a grooming session yet she has never been bathed. Her thick coat repels dirt, grime, etc. like no other dog I have ever seen.

My heart goes out to you, man, been there, done that but it's what you go through when you lose someone you really love, even if that someone is an animal - you communicate, become friends and do things together and it becomes a big part of both your lives.

Your dog sounds awesome, I'm glad you finally got another dog, .. I think it is the best therapy.

Thanks for your kind words.

Sorry to hear that bro but you're wrong. It's not just a dog. I know that's how some people look at things, and that's fine, but dogs, and pets, really do become a part of a persons family.

It's very tough to lose them.

You are right on all three counts, .. they aren't just dogs, they are part of the family, and they are very tough to lose.

Pets are without question family. Sorry to hear about your loss. He lived a good long life though - you should be glad you gave that to him.

Thanks Sarge, .. yes we are grateful for every year we had him.

He was struggling near the end, so it is best for him.

Still tough on "Mom & Dad" though.

It's been almost two weeks, .. we still mention him and talk about him every day to each other. But we are doing much better.

Angus has been gone for over two years and we still talk about him. I found a bunch of pictures I took when he was a pup yesterday. It brought back a lot of good and bad memories.

Angus, .. that's a cool name for a dog. What kind was he?

We have started talking a little bit about another puppy, ... but it will happen when it happens.

IMO, that's the best mix of dog. My Boxer_Pitt mix will be 12 this halloween. She's been my best and most consistent friend over that course of time. She's just now starting to show signs of age, and it pains me to think that she's declining and running low on years. She tore her ACL two months ago when we were playing....she came up lame after umping back and forth for a stick....something she used to be able to do tirelessly, and at a height most dogs could never achieve. Now I'm afraid to play with her.

She's one of those dogs you feel incredibly lucky to have shared your life with...one of those dogs you probably won't ever be lucky enough to replace in your heart. Although I'll probably try with another bull boxer...

To the OP, I'm sorry for your loss. Always cherish the good memories...they'll stay with you forever.

Our other dog is great but she'll never have my heart like Angus did. He was my first dog. He had his issues but was a good dog for the most part.

I'd love to see a pic of your dog. Angus had just enough boxer to make him not look like a typical pit. He was taller than any pure bred pit I have ever seen. I'm 6'1 and I could pet him on the head without bending over.

My little girl was a rescue, and I never got to see what the mother and father looked like...but I was fairly sure of her bloodlines because of the coloring and characteristics of the pups in her litter....mostly brindles, white/brindle, black/white, or fawn. One of the fawns looked exactly like a little boxer pup. I picked the biggest/most aggressive pup because that's what I thought I wanted at the time (not real aggression mind you, just the one that was the pushiest with the other pups in terms of getting to food).
Anyway...I didn't get exactly what I thought I wanted. My little girl never got over 45 lbs, but she sure has a big heart...

I'll start another thread with some pics of my girl so I don't hijack this thread....

Angus was the runt and he ended up 110lbs :laugh2: but his litter mates were the size of your dog.

I guess that's pretty normal...I saw one of her brothers (the one that looked like a boxer pup), when they were about 2 years old, and he was about 85 lbs of solid muscle. Go figure. :)

Thanks, .. and 'will do'.

Cherishing the memories is the easy part.
