Safety answer White not Jones?

We have two corners that we've acquired this offseason who have the ability to play safety, but all I've heard is how Jones might be moved to safety.

It appears to me that White might be a better candidate for that move because he was cut after not playing that great at corner when forced into more action while Jones might show he's already among our top three corners.

White might give us some of that same ability at a deep center fielder while taking less away from the corner group.

Of course, it's hard to know if White will even play well enough to make the roster. I think he could stand a better chance of doing it at safety, though, where we don't have a coverage type like him.

White wasn't cut bc he was a good safety and a bad corner...

what are you talking about, thats the new trend, get rid of good players. Believe me, you missed the boat on this guy. I have it on good authority the guy is so good, the team just didnt see it. Nor anyone else.

I sort of assumed we brought in White to handle the slot duties if we were serious about moving Scandrick to LCB. and that Jones was going to be primarily a CB but play FS in one or two special packages. That latter bit I just threw in there based off of Jerry saying we avoided some of what Marinelli wanted to do last year because we didn't have the right personnel fit at FS.

On a side note, man, I'm pretty excited with the little bit I've seen from Jones from the rookie camp. he just looks so natural shadowing receivers and with catching the football. He plucks it out of the air like a pro already. He's got speed, and we know he can jump. I think he's going to be a heck of a player sooner rather than later.

White will be our nickel/slot CB.

I'm thinking that myself.

As I see things..

some of what has to happen is..

first we have to see what is going to shake out with Carr and Claiborne.

Then depending on that..

we will know how to use our #1 draft pick..

at CB or move him to FS or even SS.

This also clarifies Scandrick..

whether he plays a CB or just a nickel back/slot back.

meaning our current safeties either start or they get cut or traded or play ST and are backup.

It's like Abbott and Costello..

Who's on First?

Who ever said there's a question at safety? Perhaps the front office is happy with who's back there already.

My understanding is that he didn't play well at corner, but hasn't spent enough time at safety in the NFL to know what he really can do there. He might be bad at both, but if we start him out playing safety, it would give us the chance to see ... rather than starting him out at corner, where he might be fifth or sixth in the pecking order.

The write-ups on him that I've read said it was likely he'd make a better safety in the pros than corner, although it sounds like he'd be more of a strong safety than free safety candidate.

White is an up-and-coming prospect out of Samford who has great size for a cornerback and could be moved back to safety at the next level given his skill set. He has been a consistent tackler and run defender.
Strengths
White is very strong in run support, where he takes great angles toward the ball. He uses his feet to track runners and fit on them to make plays. He approaches ball carriers like a safety would, which bodes well for a position switch. White displays good athletic ability when near a receiver with the ball is in the air, but he can struggle getting to that point. All these skills combine to make him a stronger and more intriguing safety than corner, especially given his size.

COULD SURPRISE: Cornerback Corey White: The Saints certainly don't mind taking players from small schools and White, who has 4.4 speed and great leaping ability, filled the bill in the fifth round. Was projected by most scouts as a strong safety, but the Saints will put him at corner -- his college position.

The Saints might have done an injustice to him in trying to make him a corner IDK.

Mix them up in TC and let Marinelli perform his magic!

Exactly
We will try lots of combination in camp
I suspect we will have the same starting safeties this year as last but will work one of these more athletic kids in on some packages
Jones seem to be much better playing press than playing in space so don't see that as a great fit at safety and since Mo will be gone next year seems logical to spend his time in camp developing as a cb
White does seem to be a guy who may be able to develope as a safety but is far from being ready to start at safety

You've spent hours pouring over his game footage to determine this???

No. And neither did the saints. They just cut him because they don't like the way he dresses

Hopefully all gets decided based on their play this training camp.

Good post. I've wondered about this also.

I really feel that Jones should be at CB. If Jones plays Safety, who is the 3rd CB? IMO, Jones could beat out Carr as the 2nd CB and is definitely better than any guys competing for the 3rd CB spot.

The Safety play might not have been great in 2014, but it was good enough and Wilcox will improve with more experience, better CB and LB play around him and a better pass rush.

The big question is whether or not Carr is on the team in 2015. That 8M salary is difficult to ignore, but they become really thin without him. If Carr did leave, then both Jones and White would likely be CBs for 2015.

I've reviewed about 120 snaps from White with the Saints. He had a lot of really good snaps, but would flake out on occasion and his failed plays seemed to be big and obvious. IMO, at worst case he is better than Sterling Moore.
