It wouldn't hurt to add a 10th as I think it's likely we'll carry that number.

My ideal numbers for defense is 10 DL, 6 LB and 10 DB.

As things stand, I have 9 DBs making the cut.

CB (5) - Orlando Scandrick, Nolan Carroll, Anthony Brown, Chidobe Awuzie, Jourdan Lewis

S(4) - Byron Jones, Jeff Heath, Kavon Frazier, Robert Blanton

I'd like to add another safety, someone who can push Blanton off the roster or make the team keep 5 safeties. I'm not against keeping 6 CBs, either, so I hope we're aggressive in undrafted free agency looking for guys who can fill that role or land on the Practice Squad.

Upgradable, but not bad depth IMO. Both will see far more time on special teams than with the regular defense, although I'm glad to have picked up Blanton since he has some starting experience.

With the corners we've now got, I would definitely use the corners over the safeties. If Heath ends up as the starting safety, he and Jones would stay on the field in the nickel and dime, but I can't see the other safeties getting on the field ahead of Awusie and Lewis, assuming our top three corners at least to start the season will be Scandrick, Brown and Carroll.

Of course, it is always possibly one or both of the two new corners won't pan out and we'll be happy to have Blanton and Frazier on the field instead.
DB's tend to have a steep curve. We shouldnt expect both to be gangbusters

I don't disagree. Neither may get playing time to start out except on special teams, and neither may turn out to be anything special. And Lewis may be facing a suspension anyway. I'm just glad we addressed the secondary with those picks and those players.

The cool thing is we have at least 8 legitimate, playable NFL DBs, 9 if Frazier pans out. There will be competition all over the field. The only secured starter is probably Jones. Let them fight it out in TC and preseason for the other roles/playing time.

Winning the job is not the point. People keep saying he is odd man out and that's false. Blanton would be first gone. I think Frazier can win the job by the way
Blanton would be first, but both could be cut. Depending on who we add and how camo and preseason goes

I don't see anybody this late in the draft pushing Frazier off the roster. You can think that but he played decent in snaps he received as a rookie.

Had we drafted Adams, Obi, Hooker etc. then maybe. A 5th-7th isn't

Like I said it depends on camp battles

To suggest that Heath is good enough that we don't need to draft a safety is lunacy. Yes he has made some int's and I will give him credit for that. But the moment he steps on the field, QBs go right at him and they do that for a reason.

Not sure if you're talking to me, but I wasn't suggesting that. I'm suggesting that Awuzie's ability to play safety along with bringing in Blanton gives me enough confidence that out of the three of them we will be able to put a competent safety out there.

I wasn't referring to anyone in particular. Just the general idea that Heath should be considered a lock as our starting safety which I obviously disagree with.
