How about some examples of 32 year old players that signed significantly larger contracts? They might exist, but you're just randomly speculating without some reference.

The contract structure was an example. I said from the outset of that post that I didn't know how much he would get as a Free Agent.

Or we could just look at what is suggested for Allen.

One NFL executive, speaking on condition of anonymity for competitive reasons, guessed Allen will get $9 million to $11 million a year. Another executive guessed Elvis Dumervil's five-year, $26 million deal with Baltimore could be closer "because of age and tread on the tires."

What a mess we have

And for what? To go 8-8 and miss the playoffs 3x in a row??

I say target # 1 should be DE Michael Johnson from bengals ... Dude can play

I am guessing you were being facetious there.
If you weren't be very aware we aren't even in that ball park.
He'll get more than Spencer and Hatcher combined.

If cut after 2 years, Dumerville would get 13M for 2 years of service. He is only 29.

I said 2 years, 12M for Allen.

And that says his base in 2014 is guaranteed then?
Your computer screen must look different than mine and stuff.

It says very clearly

"$40 million guaranteed (Signing Bonus + 2013-14 base salaries)"

Just as I pasted.

Right... and that was the CLOSER to number as opposed to 9 to 11 per year.

Wanna wager Jared Allen doesn't get more?

You are off by 7m in the OP which is really what should be pertinent to the thread.

Jared Allen isn't signing any deal for 13m over 2 years.
He'll have more than that guarantee by far and wants to play another 4 or 5 seasons.

But he is not likely a Cowboys target anyway.

Dumerville signed a 5 year, 26M contract prior to the 2013 season.

Johnson is a 26 year old player who is dominant versus the run and offers solid pass rush.

Dumervil is a pure pass rusher who caught a broke NFL marketplace.

BTW. Dumervil's agent was fined and suspended. He had agreed to a larger deal to return to Denver but the agent didn't get the paperwork turned in in time.

I'll say that he signs a contract that if he is cut after 2 years, he makes less than 16M total.

For being 32 I don't see a GM giving Allen a 4-5 yr deal. A 2 year deal seems more logical. Allen wants to win and will look for a contender that he can help in turn he may settle for less.

That's certainly a fairer number and perhaps about just under right.
But also 4m above the starting premise.
You gave him a 25% pay raise now.

I expect he gets ~ a 4 year deal worth 32m or 5 year deal with 38m much of that for show.
18m guaranteed which would be his first two years.

It isn't about him playing the years for the team but about spreading cap hits out.
Team has little to lose by having his rights four 4 or 5 years.

Deal almost certainly will be 4 years plus as virtually all non-base, non-rookie deals which include a true signing bonus.

VERY hard to get under cap and conduct any business prior to June 2nd awaiting Ware release so VERY unlikely to happen at this time.

I would rather have MJ going forward over Ware but it doesn't appear to be in the cards.

Here's a nifty site.

http://overthecap.com/calculator/?Team=Cowboys

Dallas is currently over the cap by $21M according to their numbers. You can cut players and see how it impacts the cap. You can designate as a June 1st cut and see how it impacts the cap.

Even the June 1st moves still put Dallas over $3M above the cap.

And then your DL consists of who? Hatcher's gone. Spencer's gone. Ware's gone. And Ratliff is already gone.

So who plays DL? Dallas already screwed itself by not having any depth at that position whatsoever so they had to go to bums off the street before week 2. Now they have to fill in the 4 holes created by losing the 4 projected starters from 2013?

I think extending Dez will be a mistake. He's going to want Megatron type money, and IMO, a WR isn't worth that much.

This organization has got to stop putting all of their eggs in only a few baskets.

trade Bryant to the 49ers we sure could use the #1 and #2 or #3 picks in return while spending the money that would have put us way over on a decent sure handed WR.

Goodbye DeMarcus Ware. Big 94 fan! now I am a fan of trading him for a 4th round pick.

I have calculated the 2014 cap numbers. I know there were reports of the Cowboys being 31M over, but by my calculations they are only 18.8M over prior to any restructures. This includes dead-money from cutting Ratliff (6.9M) and from a few other players.

Rule of 51 (the off-season cap rule): 141M
Projected 2014 cap: 123M
Over: (141M-123M) 18.8M

Savings from Restructures
Romo: 10,128,000
Carr: 5,328,000
Witten: 3,328,000
Lee: 3,728,000
Scandrick: 2,128,000

Total Savings from Restructures Above: 24.64M

Restructure Savings - Over = 24.64M - 18.8M = 5.84M

The 1st year of Brandon Carr's 50M contract had a cap hit of 3.6M. That is 7.2% of the total contract value.

Using the 5.84M available and using the 7.2% from Carr's contract as an estimate for the 1st year cap hit, they can sign players to 80M total contract value for a 1st year cap hit of 5.84M.

June 1st Cuts:
Ware: 2014 Cap Savings 12.25M
Austin: 2014 Cap Savings 5.5M
Total Ware/Austin 17.75M

Summary: They can sign free agents for a total contract value of about 80M and then free up 17.75M on June 1st to sign draft picks and give new contracts to players like Dez and Tyron Smith.

Don't forget to pass on Bruce carter..let him walk while we get us a new player (G, DT, DE or SS or CB) in FAgency

Crawford bass Hayden draft pick

Second team
Selvie free agent draft pick brown

We're not going to be contenders anyway. Might as well get this cap situation straight. Can't rebuild while overpaying underperforming players

Thanks for that site. I was just playing around there and it was ridiculously easy to get under the cap. I hope that site is accurate. I restructured Romo ($10M), Ware ($8M), Lee ($3M) and maybe someone else I forgot. I designated Austin a June 1st cut and cut Orton. I also tendered Bailey at a second round for $2M. Something like that and voila, I went from -$21M to +$1M. So, it looks like it can be done with not so much pain. It looks do-able.
