Do we have the wherewithal financially to sign Hardy to a long term contract without it affecting our ability to re-sign the key young Cowboys(i.e. Frederick, Martin, etc..)?

I initially thought Hardy would be a 1 year rental and I was fine with that. Now, I'm strongly leaning towards trying to re-sign Hardy to a long-term deal. Of course, assuming the team is comfortable that Hardy's issues are behind him. We have some nice young pieces on the DL but not quite enough IMO to let Hardy walk freely out the door. He seems to be a great teammate and embraced the role as a leader. Assuming he returns to even 90% of the player he was in 2013, he's still an elite DL. It's a lot easier to fill out a defense when you're pretty set up front with Hardy, Gregory, Crawford and Lawrence among your top 5-6 DL for a few years.

The money is there to sign him to a 5/60m deal. We will see if he has enough impact on the Defense to make it worth it.

The only ones left to take care of are TFred and Martin and they are a few years away from big money.

They could make it work if he is somewhat reasonable
But depends on what he does the rest of the season
He hasn't played a down yet and honestly with Gregory the need to keep him is a bit less
Gregory is going to be a good pass rusher

I think you might have to include Collins in there, too, if he pans out as expected. I suppose they could place a high tender on him at the end of his deal, but given that he kind of got screwed to start with, I think they would, out of fairness, just give him a new deal.

Yes, but with our focus on a 4man rush, we will need several good pass rushers. They are the main factor in the entire defensive scheme.

We need Hardy, Gregory, and Lawrence, as well as Crawford.

Hardy can play LDE, RDE and 3T. They won't have a problem finding snaps for all of them.

True, which is why I said "if he pans out as expected". It'll be interesting to see how the front office handles Leary after this year, but I'm inclined to think they let him pursue other opportunities and replace him with Collins (younger, and at the moment, cheaper. But I don't know much about much, so I'll defer to what you said...let's see if he can even play before we cross that bridge.

I just meant it's Collins' rookie year. His possible second contract should have no bearing on signing Hardy.

Leary is a guy you let test the market. The DAL brand might mean he gets overpaid, but I don't see anyone running to give him a huge guarantee. Free is the one I might let go next year depending on CGreen's and Collins development.

I hope you're right. I would love to keep both Leary and Collins. I didn't even think about Free being the odd man out. That said, I can just see someone like Washington or Philly making Leary an offer that we won't/can't match.

It's going to depend how much he can command. He's done a good job, in my opinion, of rehabilitating his image. If he blows it up on the DL, he'll be in some demand.

Where I thought he was a one-year rental to start with, he seems to like it here and the team seems to be impressed with him. We do a good job of getting deals done with talented by troubled/risky players. I'd say we're probably the front runner to extend him at this point unless his play just puts him through the roof. Though there will definitely be a lot of other teams interested, too.

He's got a girlfriend/kid on the way, too, which could be a moderating influence for him/consideration if he wants to settle down someplace for the next 4-5 years.

I would say the verdict is in and we need to sign Hardy long-term. Let's go heavy on the DL and go light elsewhere if we must, but we have to have a pass rush.

Yes. It is not trivial but it can be done.

We need all 3 of these guys and will find a way !! The Cowboys could cut Carr next year and use some of that money to pay Hardy !!

I think we should give Leary a 2nd round tender offer next year and Free...Well he is not looking too good right now, so let's see after the season is over.
