IMO the FO is doing a few things this year (by no means am I agreeing with their strategy):

1. Cut unwanted contracts and players when their “escape clause” occurs in their contract
2. Retain Quinn as an in-house replacement for MM, and Payton as a possible external HC option for 2023
3. Roll leftover cap space into 2023 to allow max flexibility for a new coach to shape the roster

They have in essence created a “make or break” year for MM and have his replacement ready in the wings. If he wins out and succeeds? Great! They have cap space to reshape the roster in 2023.

If they struggle and lose? MM becomes the easy scape goat, and they replace him at HC and move forward with the next puppet stooge HC.

Lol. Why post this? To anger us more?

Why would it anger anyone? It shows how well we are handling our salary cap. Most times the trolls are crying because we dont have enough space.

I would be more interested in seeing what the cap looks like heading into next season. Does anyone have those numbers?

We're trying hard to spend it. Bringing in guys like Turpin for a tryout we'll have that amount down to $20 million in no time.

I would be more impressed if they kept if for next year. It would also be nice to have around 10 million to do some things during the season if we needed to.

It's completely unrealistic for a team to eschew free agency and expect to advance deep into the playoffs and win a Super Bowl. We can waste time blaming this player or that coach, etc. etc...it's all window dressing.
You basically would have to dominate the draft process 3-4+ consecutive years, which again is unrealistic.
:hammer:
Yep we blow off this major avenue to obtain talent and overpay our own.
Makes no sense to me.
We have amatuers running the show however, so maybe I should not be surprised.:(

Surprised the Browns have that much cap space when they got 30mil in dead cap.

Unless they are holding this money for Dak next year
I am not happy with this.
You can't ignore free agency and be a successful team.
If they choose to ignore FA fine.

Then dont take risks in the second round of the draft because you need to almost guarantee you're drafting starting players.

They spent nothing this year but still had a chance in the draft to get Jermaine Johnson, Travis Jones, Tolbert, and Jamaree Salyer. That would have made our defense a top 5 unit and solidified LG. Instead. We got what we got. Not using FA forces you to reach.

Im not sure how cap rollover works.

It angers me because Wagner was there for the taking. And we decided to keep money for what?

Yep, it's a major flaw of this front office to ignore top flight free agents and then dumpster dive.

I believe Wagner was 17 million per season for 5 years. That's ridiculous.

And if you sign Wagner you might as well just put the careers of Cox and Damone Clark on the back burner.

5yr 50mil that could escalate to 65mil. First year cap hit of 2.5mil then fluctuating cap hit of 12.mil +/- a mil.
Wagner got an option to void the last 3 years of his deal if he plays 90% of the snaps in 2022 and 23 and either makes the probowl or playoffs those two years.

I think this is actually very smart. Don’t waste cap space on expensive older players who will be gone or bad risks in 1-2 years. Don’t waste cap space on bums prior to camp. There will be veterans available at every position during training camp and preseason cuts. Wait and see if young guys step up on the OL, pass rush, WR, etc. Give those guys a chance; then you’ll know what you need at a time when better vets are available via release or very good vets via cheaper trades.

If the young’s guys show up in camp, save most of that money for critical unexpected injuries or roll it into next year.

Wagner at 10 million per year for 2 years would have been great. If thats really what it was.

If anything, I would have liked to see them sign a veteran OT to play in place of Steele.
