We can't afford two $80 million CBs and that is what we are looking at with Newman at the end of the season.

Drafting one to eventually replace Henry is far better idea. If not the first with Ross or Houston or Revis then possibly round 2 or 3 with Michael Coe.

Remember Fred Bennett at South Carolina was thought to be a definite 1st round guy until a bad second half of his senior year and could be had probably in the 5th or 6th round. I would take the chance on him there.

I don't think Newman will quite demand Clements' salary. I'm not saying that Newman is worse then Clements, I'm just saying the INT numbers aren't there (unless of course he breaks out) so it's harder to justify a record contract.

Really have to laugh at people who think INTs are what a CB is all about.
A CBs FIRST duty is to prevent completions and TDs. THEN he can worry about INTS. What would you rather have- a CB like Newman who hardly ever gives up a big play or TD, but does not get a lot of INTS; or burnt toast like BSPNs favorite child Deangelo Hall who gives up TDs right and left and gets lauded for the occasional fancy INT?

Check out year 2006. Think this guy played a little harder last year. I always liked Wilson better but the guy is always injured. Asante smelled money. From a Pats fan you or any other team can have him. This reminds me of Ty Law saying "hey a man has got to eat". Yeh right, on millions. Cry me a river.

And I did not feel this way about Branch. Brady and Branch had a chemistry. We should have paid him. And it cost us a Super Bowl. In my opinion this is something different. Show him the door. One first round pick would be sweet.

I want him to desire with every bone in his body to have the best season possible so he can cash-in in 2008. Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that Patriots cornerback Asante Samuel, a free agent limited by the franchise tag, wants to be traded.
"This is to let everybody know that I'm not happy anymore and things are not going well," Samuel told Schefter. "At first I thought it was going well, but it's not. We have a difference of opinion in my value. They think I'm worth one price and the other teams think I'm worth a lot more. If a long-term deal can’t be done at fair numbers for me and New England, then I want to be traded."
Samuel says that he is prepared to sit out the season, if need be. "If it's best for me and my family," Samuel said, "I will do that. Absolutely."
Sure. Look, none of these franchise players is going to miss a paycheck. So look for Samuel to sign his tender on the eve of the start of the regular season, and collect game checks worth more than $458,000 each. That's almost as much as he made for the entire season in 2006.
The problem is that the Pats have shelled out plenty of money for multiple free agents in the past month, and Samuel has been paying close attention.
"I've been patient, haven't said anything bad, haven't said anything negative," Samuel said. "But my patience has run out. Business is business. They handled their business their way and I'm handling my business my way. I hope not, I really hope not, but it's looking more and more like it could be time to move on." (Or move out.)

I agree 1000% and yet Brady still got you guys into the playoffs with scrubs like Gaffney. Assante is solid but I would only give up a 2nd for him...

We will have no depth very soon. Glenn will not last forever and I don't see anyone else on the roster with starting potential. Both Reeves and Jones make me nervous just by being in the nickel.

I'm not opposed to drafting a CB early (even rd one, though my preference would be 2nd or 3rd)...

I'm just opposed to giving up the picks AND a ton of cap space for it
