There is risk to it.
He basically is a step away from getting the boot for a year, not just four games.
That said, I still would have sent a fifth to rent him, if even for twelve games. We did a similar deal for Scott Fujita and let him walk.
The Jets got the better end of the deal. Yes, the Steelers were supposedly going to cut him if they could not find a trade partner, but that fifth round choice is nothing for a player like Holmes. If he is a good boy, it is a great gamble.
...for a four game suspension? Is he able to attend training camp? Is he able to practice with the team during this period?
If he is allowed to participate fully and only has to sit on the sidelines for four games it may work out for them for the (12) game rental.
What we don't know is how much of his attitude is he willing to change. Obviously his present method has not been successful in keeping him out of trouble. If he can change it may turn out to be a real steal for the Jets if they sign him.
(12) games for Holmes and no SuperBowl, but seeing him walk isn't really a big gain in my opinion. In 2012 you will be starting all over again at one WR position and you have put a lot of your coaching into a rental.
(12) games, he contributes, you win it all and he walks I would say it's a good deal for the Jets.
(12) games, he contributes, he re-signs, and he stays out of trouble is a good deal to me. It allows you to stroke off one WR position for the next few drafts.
