There are different ones. But I cannot see a difference between the quality of play with the two leagues.
There were some decent veteran coaching staffs in the AAF like Spurrier, Erickson, Martz, Riley and Neuheisel that might have given them a better advantage.
The head coaches I see in the XFL are not that impressive. They seem to be less experienced and successful. Only Stoops, Zorn, Trestman and June Jones have been head coaches in college or the NFL. And Zorn and Trestman were mostly flops at the NFL level.
Yes, the quality of overall team play might be worse for the XFL.
The group of players comes from the same basic pool. Players not employed by an NFL team.
The only way that would really vary much is if one league got permission from the NFL to hire players under contract with NFL teams (i.e. Futures contract players which is basically the term for practice squad players in the off-season).
The AAF tried to pay enough that some players would not sign Futures contracts with NFL teams until after the AAF season was over.
I think the pay was 250K for the season (if they had played a full season).
That was enough to get a guy like DLineman Shakir Soto to not sign a futures contract and wait until after the AAF season to sign with an NFL team.
I don't know the pay for the XFL, but maybe those few players like Soto are not available for the XFL but that's about the only change in the pool of available players that I can see.
Also, if the pay is too low, they might not get those players like Damontre Moore that had been a legit NFL player but was out of an NFL job due to behavior. Conversely, if the pay is higher, then more of those types would sign up.
