Scandrick's turn to start
Orlando Scandrick, it’s your turn.
The Dallas Cowboys’ second-year cornerback will start opposite Terence Newman in Sunday night’s highly anticipated home opener against the New York Giants at new Cowboys Stadium.
Scandrick and fellow second-year cornerback Mike Jenkins, named co-starters before the regular season, will rotate games as the starter, at least until one decisively pulls ahead of the other.
Jenkins started last week at Tampa Bay, his hometown.
“Of course, it means everything to me,” Scandrick said of getting the start. “I just want to come out this game and make a lot of plays and just stand out and win.”
Scandrick, who played last week in nickel packages, will match up against Giants receivers Steve Smith and Mario Manningham, and an otherwise unheralded cast that, much like the Cowboys’ corps without Terrell Owens, is out to prove it can succeed without former No. 1 receiver Plaxico Burress.
A crowd of more than 100,000 is expected to attend the nationally televised game, a mix that adds a layer of intensity to an already rich division rivalry.
“Electric, electric,” Scandrick said of his expectations of the atmosphere at Cowboys Stadium. “I’m charged up for this game. It’s a big game, it means a lot and it’s a chance to make a statement to the whole NFC East and the whole NFL.”
