Scary Nickel D line?

I'm not concerned about Cowboys speed packages.

It is the run downs that Cowboys struggle mightily on.

Cowboys need to focus on developing a HULK SMASH package instead.

We need Bahanna and Ridgway to be more then speed bumps. Those two developing might be the key to the defense against the run this season.

Very few QBs are immune to pressure. Or handle the pressure very well. From what I've seen, AR isn't one of them.

We’ll find out if there’s anything scary about our defense besides Parsons when the season starts. The performance our defense had against San Francisco in the playoffs is still stuck in my head.

Yeah, our pass rush isn't going to matter one bit if we can't stop the run.

You have more faith in a 5th round who is not special athletically or production wise over a freak athletic 2nd rounder with better production than 1st overall pick?

As a pass rusher, Williams seems to have the skill set to be better than anyone on the team not named Micah. Need to see him consistently defending the run in the pro's as that was a knock coming out of college. From what I saw on tape he should be fine. Ridgeway was an animal against the run, which is why I referenced him.

IM not i believe Fowlers every bit the player randy was if not more..its at least wash..addin Sam and havig a rotation of Gholston and Armstrong for both sides id say we haven't got weaker, maybe stronger but at minimum its a wash,.

I hope so. Haven't watched any tape on Fowler so my assessment isn't complete. Randy was really good against the run and if Fowler can bring that level of play to Dallas, we're in great shape.

When both DLaw and Gregory were active, Parsons didn't play DE.

• Parsons as an outside pass rusher will be in a front that looks like the front 5 of a 3-4 defense.
  • Something like this with DLaw hand down and Gregory standing up.
  • Sam Williams will replace Gregory in this alignment.
  • Parsons.....DLaw.....DL.....DL.....Gregory

• The difference is that it will be Nickel, meaning only 1 ILB instead of 2 ILBs in a 3-4.
  • Dan Quinn played this type of alignment often in the later part of last season with DLaw hand down and Gregory standing up.
  • Most often there was only 1 DT.

• Quinn also played some snaps with 5 DL plus Parsons.
  • Usually there was only 1 DT in that alignment.
  • The DE on the opposite side from Parsons was standing up.
  • In this alignment there were zero ILBs.
  • Sam Williams will replace Gregory in this alignment.
  • Parsons.....DLaw.....DL.....DL.....DL.....Gregory

You can add Fowler to that mix and just something I noticed about Mr. Williams. He played a lot of OLB (as did Fowler, so maybe that is the move) in a 3-4 his previous season before this last season. I believe we will see him coming off the edge as an OLB, perhaps in some modified Nickle look.

Fowler reminds me of Robert Quinn.
- Good pass rusher but struggles vs the run.
- The odd issue with both Quinn and Fowler is that they seem more comfortable as a 4-3 DE than 3-4 OLB.
- Normally playing 3-4 OLB is a benefit to pass rusher that struggles vs the run.

• Fowler is a good pass rusher.
  • His issue is run defense.
  • Oddly, he looked slightly better in run defense in Dan Quinn's scheme as a DE than he did as a 3-4 OLB in other seasons.
  • Quinn just has a way of scheming to maximize player's abilities and mask their deficiencies.
• 2016 to mid 2018: Jacksonville
  • In 2017 he had 8 sacks despite not starting a game.
  • This is an indication of being a pass rush specialist (i.e. The 1st snap of the game is a 1st down).
• 2018: 8 games with the Rams as a 3-4 OLB (Traded to Rams mid-season).
• 2019: With the Rams as a 3-4 OLB. Had 11.5 sacks.
• 2020: DE in Quinn's defense.
  • He missed 2 games with an injury issue (1 was on the Covid list, but teams were able to put injured players on that list).
  • He was visibly better before the injury.
• 2021: Falcons switched to a 3-4. Was played as a 3-4 OLB.
  • Missed 3 games with injuries.
  • Started all 5 games before the injury but only 1 after.

Quinn and this D have a few things to sort out, but I like the young talent and upside that this team has rostered on D currently, even the 1 tech is upgraded, basically never had one to begin with, but at least we have competition at the position now.
This defense has a good chance to become far superior than last season.

Thanks for the info x. Sounds like a good addition to that squad but doesn't do much to relieve concerns about that run defense. Maybe another year in the system learning under Quinn will do alot of good for the young guys on that line. Really happy he decided to stick around. Best coaching hire since Parcells imo.

That’s not that good of a lineup, decent but not scary by any stretch. Who are all these DT you say we can play. We have jags at DT not necessarily DT caliber players.

It's way too early to tell how good this pass rush will be. I think we should all temper our expectations with Sam Williams. Most edge rushers take time to develop on the next level, what we saw with Parsons isn't the norm.
