If Lewis ever plays outside and plays well, I'm going to be POed. If he plays outside and sucks, I'll declare that they were right and I was wrong.
The issue with Lewis is not size as the vast majority of people claim. The difference in size between him and Brown is minimal (similar arm length, 1 inch height diff and 4 pounds based on draft weight).
The issue with Lewis is that he plays a technique that is not the ideal fit for what KR wants from his CBs. The scheme is based on CBs playing very specific techniques. The FS plays a specific way based on the assumption that the CBs are going to play a specific technique on that defensive play call. Lewis is evolving towards the KR techniques but even in the two games last season when he was the starting Nickel CB and in the game where he played 8 snaps as the Dime DB against Kamara, he still favors his trail technique which he played in college. That technique is OK as a Nickel or Dime CB in the KR scheme but as a starting outside CB it is the opposite of what KR prefers.
KR did rave about him as a player and about how he has handled his role (not being in the top 3 on the depth chart last season).
I expect Lewis to be the starting Nickel CB next season and he was the starting Nickel CB in this game and 2 games last season when Awuzie and Brown each missed a game.
It is really good to have that type of quality depth. When Byron Jones is back to playing 100% of the snaps, I expect to see more games where Lewis gets snaps as the Dime CB.
