After reading your comment I thought I would see just how badly the Browns have been sucking on high picks:
Since they were re-franchised in 1999 the Browns have had 14 picks in the top-50 including 5 in the top-10, and also including 2 #1 overall picks.
I'll go down the list according to the player's draft number:
#1 1999 QB Tim Couch - Out of football after the 2003 season although his name has resurfaced from time to time, most recently last year when he was in the Packer's TC but was released after a couple of weeks. He never lived up to the hype coming out of college and certainly didn't live up to being the #1 overall pick in 1999 (although he turned out to be a better QB than #3 pick Akili Smith or #12 Cade McNown). Not a total bust (like Heath Shuler or Terry Baker) as he played below average but a long ways from what you would expect from the #1 pick. That qualifies him as a major bust.
#1 2000 DE Courtney Brown - Now this guy was a total bust. He is still in the league, playing with Denver the last 2 years, but he didn't play at all last season. He looked like he might come on in his 2nd season when he had 4.5 sacks in 5 games but he got hurt and never showed that ability again.
#3 2001 DT Gerrard Warren - Another DL who has since moved on to the Denver Broncos. He had a decent year as a rookie but went downhill from there, never a good sign. He is a journeyman player who is fortunate to be starting at all. Major bust.
#3 2005 WR Braylon Edwards - Edwards didn't do much his rookie year, which isn't that unusual for a rookie WR but his 2nd season he did come on a bit more. Still, 61 catches for 884 yards and 6 TDs isn't exactly lighting it up and you surely expect a lot more from the 3rd guy taken in the draft. He has shown some skills at times but is very inconsistent and doesn't look like he will ever amount to a whole lot. Major bust.
#6 2004 TE Kellen Winslow Jr. - Bad stuff just seems to happen to this guy which is usually a sign that he is pretty stupid and puts himself into dumb situations where bad stuff is likely to happen (hear that Keith Davis?). When he finally got to play last year he did pretty good with 89 receptions (which led the league) for 875 yards but only 3 TDs. I think he will eventually be a top TE in the league but only if he changes his lifestyle and attitude. Potential star.
#13 2006 LB Kamerion Wimbley - Wimbley was a guy many were hoping we would select and he certainly made some of us wish we had instead of Carpenter as he racked up 62 tackles and 11 sacks in his rookie season. He is a total loss in pass coverage but is a very good pass rusher. Will have to see if he will have a sophomore slump but I think he will be a star in the league.
#16 2002 RB William Green - You expect a lot more from a mid-1st round pick than 887 yards, which wasn't too bad for a rookie but that was his best year. He went downhill from there and was released injured after the 2005 season. He has not yet resurfaced but he probably will eventually. I don't expect him to be anything more than a 3rd string guy though. Solid bust.
#21 2003 C Jeff Faine - It's hard to rate OLs but Faine was decent for the Browns. They took the opportunity to upgrade with LeCharles Bentley and Faine replaced Bentley with the Saints. He was a Pro-Bowl alternate this past season with New Orleans so he must not suck too badly. What sucks for the Browns is that Bentley got a huge contract but never got to play for them as he went down in a training camp drill with a major knee injury. Faine wasn't a bust but they could sure use him now.Good player.
That's all of the 1st round picks. Of their high 2nd rounders, 4 of them were WRs and only one is still with the team, Dennis Northcutt, and he isn't all that.
In the final analysis, I would say that the last few drafts have been pretty good for the Browns in the 1st round, getting Faine, Winslow, Edwards, & Wimbley after blowing all 4 of the previous ones. It just kills me to see 2 #1s and a #3 wasted like that (Couch, Brown, & Warren).
We've blown a lot of draft picks but none as high as those.
