None of this changes the fact that he wasn't needed. We have Ferguson, who is basically the same dude. Unless for some reason LS goes on some kind of a Kelce-like trajectory, this was a wasted pick.

There was a reason Schultz didn't play much. Most TE's that these guys drafted or brought in could unseat the HOF'r. But when Witten was done Schultz got his chance and did well. Similar thing happened to fergy last year. Fergy sat while Schultz played and now he's separated himself as the best TE on this team but schoon is still getting playing time as the #2.

Which would you really rather have NOW ?
To be fair, we need to see a 3 year sample size from Schoon to see how he develops because their skill set margin may narrow considerably with further experience.

of course if we had to pick now it’s an easy answer

Who would be the other blocker in 12 formation?

He was drafted for a reason.
Ryan Griffin would have been cheap. Jared Cook? Hendershot? Luepke? A lineman? Has his blocking in 12 been meaningful? Our running game sucks. I just don't see where this guy has moved the needle.

My real gripe is that we spent a 2nd round pick on Schoon when we didn't need to. Imagine if we still had both Schultz AND Ferguson, as we did last year. That combo would have helped in replacing some yards the running game isn't getting.
For the 3 years '20 thru '22 Shultz was an excellent TE, certainly in the top 5 of the NFC. Jerry should have done a better job at keeping him.

The difference is that Schultz was a 21yo 4th rounder, and Schoon is a 25yo 2nd rounder.

It's easy to stick a young Day 3 rook on the bench and give him 2 years to go up the learning curve. Schoon has a shorter window to start paying back a bigger investment.
You think that him being 25 means that he will not develop over the next few years?

Rookie TE Luke Schoonmaker has now scored more TD's than Dalton Schultz did in his rookie season.

Schultz rookie stats - 12 catches, 116 yards, 0 TD's.
Schoonmaker rookie stats (through 10 games) - 5 catches, 37 yards, 2 TD's
he's way faster and more athletic than dalton. he has more upside even though he's about the same age.

This should be Ferguson vs Schultz

Schoon is still a year away from being declared good or bad.

Most athlete's physical peak is in their mid to late 20s, and TEs are no different. The fact that Schoonmaker is spending his peak years still going up his learning curve is pretty concerning.
