Brian Schottenheimer is understandably excited about being an NFL head coach, especially of such a storied franchise. And he should be. He’s the 10th man to ever have the privilege to be head coach in Big D.

But being a rookie HC in the NFL has major challenges, which I posted on earlier this spring. NFL rookie HCs from 2008-21 in their 1st year have had a combined winning percentage of .447, or average winning about 7 games. Doesn’t mean that will happen this year in Dallas, just pointing out the NFL averages.

From 2021-2024, there have been 17 rookie head coaches in this league and only 4 of them led their teams to the playoffs in year one as a rookie NFL HC. Unless you inherit a great roster, it’s hard.

Here are the biggest challenges I think Schotty faces as a rookie HC:

  • The learning curve of managing the game. Clock management, timeouts, when to go for it on 4th down and managing game situations. It isn’t easy. To his credit, he has assigned a coach on the sideline to help him on that.
  • Being a playcaller and HC. Exactly half the league - 16 teams - have their HC calling plays. It’s hard to call plays and be an effective HC.
  • Having a meddlesome owner. Don’t need to re-litigate all this. Schotty will need lots of support to be successful in year one with minimal distractions. We aren’t exactly off to a great start on that front, lol.
  • Managing an all new coaching staff. New OC, new DC, and we have our 4th DC in 6 years; 3rd in 3 years. A lot of new to manage.
None of this ensures failure or success. Ultimately, Brian Schottenheimer will determine his own fate. I’m hoping he has enough support from those around him. Schotty is a good communicator which I think will help. In that sense, he’s off to a good start. But man he has a lot to learn!

I saw an interview of Belichick not long ago. He was asked what was the most difficult thing about going from a coordinator to a HC. He said it was getting used to how much less coaching you got to do with all the other responsibilities of the HC.

We need to define meddling from Jerry.

I do not believe he meddles like fans and the media says he does. He is not calling plays, he is not finalizing the roster. Other than a few times he did things that he should not have done. Signing certain players, TO or making trading for Roy Williams type stuff, if that was really all on his own.

If he really does meddle, then why does no former player or coach ever come out and say it. And say exactly what he is supposed to have done.

Maybe meddling is his sideline antics and circus show as to stupid comments he makes to the media. So is that really a distraction to the team, unless they, themselves allow it to be.
And yes he needs to step down as GM, and stop yapping to the press. But we know that may not happen anytime soon.

Jazz a lot of Jerry’s meddling is pretty obvious.
  • Making statements in public before checking with his HC (“Greg Hardy won’t be suspended”, “Zeke will not receive discipline”) Or giving up injury info before a game. Just to name a few.
  • Holding post game pressers literally at the same time as his HC.
  • Having an open door policy with players which undermines the HC.
  • Signing players his HC didn’t want or didn’t know was even happening. (TO with Parcells; Trey Lance with Big Mac)
  • Allowing tours to be done in the practice facilities (even during the playoffs) Former players have spoken about this.
  • Refusing to let certain coaches meetings happen without his presence. (Saw this in tv show “All or Nothing” about the 2017 season)
  • Landing a helicopter right in the middle of a team practice.
These examples are just the ones we can see. Bill Parcells and Jimmy have both said things about Jerry meddling. Parcells was subtle. Jimmy wasn’t.

They’ve never admitted it while the HC because you don’t call out your boss publicly. They didn’t say it afterwards because they signed NDAs.

He has admitted that he meets with the HC weekly and wants to be briefed on the game plan, and tells them “what he would like to see more of.”

I’d define that alone as meddling.

All I know is this….his fingerprints are all over everything and they fail repeatedly.

I’m interested to see his game management style.

McCarthy was aggressive. A lot of successful recent coaches are aggressive.

Is Schottenheimer going to be aggressive with going for it on 4th down? Or is he going to be conservative?
The hard part about being aggressive is if your team is really good, you can afford to take more chances. If not it can backfire. We will see what this team is soon.

I’d add that the FO chose to leave them short on the field yet again in order to roll over tens of millions of cap space.

I’d love to know the reason for that while the clock ticks on the QB. Even if one doesn’t like Dak, THEY do…and should be in full win now mode, not rolling over cap space when they have no prayer to stop the run.

That’s exactly what I mean when I say there can’t be a plan. As one example, why do you trade for one year of Pickens but leave all these other holes for that year?

Remember when D Lawrence was caught on tape advising a rookie to just go to Jerry if he had any problems? It could have been Jaylon Smith but I'm not sure about that. It was in that time period though.

Can he have the team ready to play week in/out?
Can he figure out mismatches and take advantage?
Can he figure out scheme to cover weaknesses or injuries?
Can he manage the dang clock?
If yes to two or more of those he will be way ahead of our last two coaches.

Those are all great questions fivetwo!

Why would he not want to hear what the game plan is. He is still not telling them what to do with it.
It is just a fan myth to bag on him.
I see nothing wrong with him attending meetings.

Yes I remember that.
However both of them are gone, and I am glad DLaw is finally gone and his yapping and constant injuries.

I think you're looking at it wrong on Dak. Dak means they should be good enough to be relevant late into the year, which is all they care about. They don't care about really going all in and making a Superbowl run.

As for Pickens, I don't totally get that one, either. My guess is they think at worst he plays a year here and they get back a pretty high comp pick that makes the trade fairly cheap. And he will make Dak look better, which Jerry thinks makes him look smarter.

I would move bullet point 3 to number 1.
