Schotty's challenges

Brian Schottenheimer is understandably excited about being an NFL head coach, especially of such a storied franchise. And he should be. He’s the 10th man to ever have the privilege to be head coach in Big D.

But being a rookie HC in the NFL has major challenges, which I posted on earlier this spring. NFL rookie HCs from 2008-21 in their 1st year have had a combined winning percentage of .447, or average winning about 7 games. Doesn’t mean that will happen this year in Dallas, just pointing out the NFL averages.

From 2021-2024, there have been 17 rookie head coaches in this league and only 4 of them led their teams to the playoffs in year one as a rookie NFL HC. Unless you inherit a great roster, it’s hard.

Here are the biggest challenges I think Schotty faces as a rookie HC:

  • The learning curve of managing the game. Clock management, timeouts, when to go for it on 4th down and managing game situations. It isn’t easy. To his credit, he has assigned a coach on the sideline to help him on that.
  • Being a playcaller and HC. Exactly half the league - 16 teams - have their HC calling plays. It’s hard to call plays and be an effective HC.
  • Having a meddlesome owner. Don’t need to re-litigate all this. Schotty will need lots of support to be successful in year one with minimal distractions. We aren’t exactly off to a great start on that front, lol.
  • Managing an all new coaching staff. New OC, new DC, and we have our 4th DC in 6 years; 3rd in 3 years. A lot of new to manage.
None of this ensures failure or success. Ultimately, Brian Schottenheimer will determine his own fate. I’m hoping he has enough support from those around him. Schotty is a good communicator which I think will help. In that sense, he’s off to a good start. But man he has a lot to learn!

Being a rookie head coach in the NFL is hard. Here’s hoping Schotty learns quickly.
Well said. I think it's a bit too much to ask a new HC to be good in season 1 at calling plays, game management and overseeing a new coaching staff...especially when you position this within Jerry's Ongoing Soap Opera. So, let's just sit back, and let this season unfold, and hope that the Bright Lights of Primetime Games, the Ongoing Cowboys Roster Drama (which will last into the season), and Jerry don't overwhelm Shotty by season's end. It may all be a bit much.

And it's safe to say, this is NOT the season that the Cowboys are going to make an unthinkable, deep playoff run, unless the better NFC Teams are crippled with season-ending injuries at multiple key positions. And even then...

What would be amazing is if this team actually had high-level trench warfare...where the dee-line could stop the run and create consistent pass rush, and the offensive line could consistently run block and protect Dak, especially against pressure fronts (er, blitzes). If this were to occur this season, it would be the most shocking part for me. I expect both lines to struggle, given the lack of depth and star power. And even if Micah stays, I still think he's too small to make a meaningful, 17-game difference, unless his stamina has improved dramatically. We'll know week 1.

You aren't telling the truth.

At all.

The truth is.

Jerry has turned this football team into a business first marketing giant who also plays football. His incessant need to prove himself right to the world is the biggest issue with this team. He CANT admit he doesn't know what he is doing so instead, he keeps trying the same things hoping something happens. (HOPE ISNT A STRATEGY) just in case you didn't know that. His NEED to be involved in everything is insane.

Does your CEO come into your weekly meetings? No. Mine doesn't. I don't hear from mine until there is a big announcement. That's how it should be.

You say he doesn't meddle? There is years of evidence to the contrary and you are trying to pull the truth card? LOL.

There is video evidence of him delaying a coaching meeting because he was late, he sits in on game plan meetings (what can he add to those?). He's on the practice field, he is using the TC press conference to hype up his documentary. You are right. He doesnt meddle. Him talking about roster selection and injuries prior to the coach is definitely not meddling at all.

Get a grip on reality man.
I still remember him coming out to talk to our kicker before the San Fran game. The only thing that is going to do is place unnecessary pressure on the player or players.

It's one of the dumbest moves I've ever seen in football.. that, and McCarthy punting on 4th and 10 with almost no time left, to set up Zeke as a center with one of the dumbest play calls I've ever seen.

You'd rather do that than go for it on 4th and 10?

The levels of stupid is unreal.

As stated earlier, the last coach here with actual say so was Parcells. When he was here, he was the face of the franchise. He did the pressers, he disclosed (or not) strategies, player involvement/roles, modified the roster bringing in his guys. Until TO.

I guess everyone has forgotten Jerry’s drunken rant / bragging that the only reason he brought Parcells in was to get the interest and support up to get the stadium deal done, i,e, make money. Once that was in the bag, here comes TO. One year later (after meddling) and out goes Parcells.

I guess it was also forgotten how Jerry talked about having to walk on eggshells when Parcells was here because he wasn’t allowed to meddle as before. Of course, he didn’t say meddle, it was evidenced in the fact that he was relegated to the background and muzzled.

Because as soon as Parcells was gone, back we went to Jerry’s status quo. And here we still sit, in purgatory.

Schotty’s hire met the number one requirement - willing to cede being the face of the organization to Jerry and allow him to do all the meddlesome things discussed in this thread.

It’s not about winning. It’s about relevancy - money - and face time - contract mess, pressers, radio shows, etc.
