Scout Talk: Patrick Peterson DB LSU

Thanks for the info SDogo.

I'll take Quinn or Jordan at 9 please.........:)

Being that I am a Nebraska Cornhusker fan, you already know who I think is the better CB, I will also add that Denard the other starting CB for Nebraska is also better than Peterson.

He does not get much if any hoopla unless you are watching or listening to someone from the Husker nation, Denard is a very good CB, shut down ability, and will hit you.

The safeties for Nebraska are darn good as well, Gomes and Haag, Larry David at LB, DT Krick, yeah we are loaded at the University of Nebraska.

I'm also a Notre Dame fan, and we have some players there, that is how I know Sam Young can play the RT spot, and some LT if need be in a pinch.

I seen a few scouts questioning his fundamentals. I have been for Quinn ever since. At 9 you need either a lock down corner or play making safety, Peterson may not be either, so since there is no sure fire O Lineman there, give the pass rusher.

BTW, what's the over/under that Peterson doesn't weigh anything close to 225 lbs? I'll take the under.

I'd put money down he weighs in at 200 at the combine.

After reading this, I want either Prince or Quinn at 9. If neither are there, then a trade down would be swell.

I am also on the Quinn bandwagon btw!! Go GET HIM JERRUH!!

I agree that way too much changes in the Spring to make any real accurate predictions at this time. You've got the combine, all the pro days, the all-star games, the interviews, the endless analysis...especially since there is no clear-cut number one this year.

From everything I'm reading and hearing about Quinn, I don't know if he'll last till #9. If he has a monster Spring, and he's considered the best pass rusher in the draft, I could see him going to the Broncos at 2.

Yeah, but considering he didn't play this year because of a NCAA rule violation, and the fact that he had a brain tumor his senior year of HS that threatened his playing career, could make teams just wary enough that he falls into our laps.

Ryan likes to play a 4-6 ALOT which requires 3 competent OLB's. So realistically he could very well be the pick at 9.

I have Rex Ryan's book on the 46 and a copy of the 85 Bears game against Minnesota that year. The front is distinctive (it's a kind of 6-2 or 4-4) and people simply don't play it anymore. That includes Rex Ryan, because I checked.

For most folks 46 simply means "pressure defense", without recognizing that the old Buddy Ryan Bears might flash four or five different fronts throughout a game. And that's not the same as showing a dozen different blitzes out of a 3 or 4 man front.

To note, I also have a copy of the 97 Bill's playbook (i.e. when Wade Phillips was their defensive coordinator) and the 46 front is a distinct section in Wade's playbook as well.

How many times did Wade's boys run the 46, if ever?

David.

Fix OL

Fix front 7 on defense

Fix safety position

This is all that matters.

Thanks for the information. I haven't been as enamored with Peterson as everyone else, although I do still think he's a good prospect. I just don't think he's a once in a decade type.

You could have just said fix everything except our corners...but I think our corners need fixing to.

So, just fix the defense.

Prince Amukamara anyone?

Not me, thank you very much..

I have no idea where people get this idea that he's " fluid " or a " natural CB ".. He is NOT. He's a natural RUNNING BACK that was converted to CB because of the backlog at RB the Huskers had at the time and the need for DB, and he's anything but " fluid ". Dennard is more " natural " and " fluid " than Prince is.

I'm not saying he's horrible, but no way in heaven I'd spend a top 10 pick on him.

Question:

What is Peterson's reputation as a student of the game ?

If he's getting by on sheer athletic prowess then I will change my mind on him as a top 10 pick ( after reading your post ). However, if he's a film and playbook worm, I don't care if he " roams ", or is not " fluid ", or any of the other stuff. I'd pick him at CB and stick him there. I would NOT move him to safety at all.

At CB, if he likes to study, all he has to do is learn the receivers and QBs tendencies. Mostly, though, that's a position where, much like RBs, it's learn a few techniques and let your God given talents take over. Seldom does he have to read offenses or formations to do his job well.

Now, if he's not a filmroom junky or bookworm, then that's a different story because sheer athleticism is not going to be enough and a top 10 pick MUST be a potential franchise cornerstone.

Having said that, I would't complain if the Cowboys get him in the middle of the 1st round ( after a trade down and depending on whom falls to #9 ), even after all the criticism. The reason for that is because it sounds like, at worse, he's another Antonio Cromatie, who had, pretty much, the same criticism coming out of FSU ( aside from the injuries ).

This is all pretty funny really, we've got a handful of comments from unnamed scouts, most if not all of which are very generalized criticisms without specifics. We don't hear any positives regarding his game, which is strange for a scout to do.

Now, right on que we have folks saying "well, that does it for me, I don't like him anymore."

I wonder what would happen if we had someone just post critical comments from scouts in like fashion about Prince Amakumara?

Prince was a RB, I do not get where you come up with the he was a natural RB, he is built like one, for sure.
All that being said, Prince is a very very good CB, and he is worth the #9 pick, I have said all season that he was the number 1 CB, in College, I am a Husker fan, I watch and record all their games as well as the Irish and the Boys.

Yes, Dennard is also a lockdown CB, and both are a whole lot better than Peterson.

Larry Asante (friend of mine) was a natural running back that was converted to safety at Nebraska and worked his way into the starting rotation for the Tampa Bay Bucs toward the end of the year.

Larry's my boy, but Prince is much better right now than Larry was coming out of school.

I have heard that the guy is not all that disciplined and he is NOT a bookworm/film junky. To be a top FS you must be a student of the game and have the instincts to make plays. I see neither from Peterson.

Always been that way, always going to be that way. I'll never get anywhere stabbing people in the back.

When you have a group of scouts together you better get ready for "scout speak". There are a handful of terms that may seem "general" to most but speak volumes in the world of scouting

Not at all when answered with in the premises of the discussion. The discussion was not what makes Peterson viewed as a top 10 choice. I think we all know that, it's widely published and discussed. What we dont often hear is what does not make him a top 10 choice. If you were to read that draft sites you would assume the man has no holes in his games. Now that's strange.

So you agree with me that he's RB yet you do not get where I came up with that he's more of a natural running back ?

perhaps I get it from the fact that he was mainly a RB in highschool in AZ ( 1000 yards rusher ), he was recruited AS a running back and wasn't switched to CB until after his freshman year, and mostly because the Huskers were incredibly thin at the position while very heavy at the RB position with players like Roy Helu, Quentin Castille, Cody Glenn ( who eventually switched to LB for the same reasons ), Marlon Lucky, Marcus Mendoza ( another one who eventually switch to WR then CB ), and Kenny Wilson at the time..

All that being said, Prince is a very very good CB, and he is worth the #9 pick, I have said all season that he was the number 1 CB, in College, I am a Husker fan, I watch and record all their games as well as the Irish and the Boys.

Prince is a solid CB, but not worth a top 10 pick in my opinion. Anything above the 12th or so, it's a reach for him. If you record Husker games, then take a look at how he played last year. This year, for some strange reason, he got the rep he got, but you know very well the Husker's schedule was very defensive back friendly. K-St, and Kansas weren't running the same type of spread offense that made Prince look like, basically, a project in those years. Colorado was a joke and when we faced better than above averages offenses like Oklahoma ST and Oklahoma, Prince was exposed. Hell, Texas even went after him and they were fielding a JV team for most of the season.

Not to mention also that Bo's defensive philsophy, which is basically man underneath with 2 deep safeties over the top, is very CB friendly. It's horrible when it comes to rushing the passer, but very friendly towards coverage..

and of course, there was this man named SUH...

Prince wasn't even regarded the best CB on the team before this year. Anthony Blue was, and players don't become " dominant " in that short of a time. Suh started showing signs as a sophomore and by his junior year he was already a beast.

Yes, Dennard is also a lockdown CB, and both are a whole lot better than Peterson.

You're dreaming.. Dennard is a very nice coverman, but let's see what happens this upcoming year. He has nice potential, but let's see what he does when the caliber of offense the Huskers are going to face jumps up to a much higher level.

Larry Asante was also one of the best safeties ( if not the best ) in Junior college, where he honed his skills. He wasn't a cornerback. Prince went straight to Nebraska and didn't switched positions until after roughly 2 years into his career.
